I think the majority of the time a HC has complete autonomy to put together his own staff, but there are some situations - like what happened with Art Briles at Grambling - were the AD might veto a potential hire.
I also know of a couple of occasions where the new HC was forced to keep an assistant from a previous regime.

You can ask Ragsdale and possibly Broadway about the pull that an AD has over his athletic department. The AD at Texas Tech sets in on all of there major hires especially the revenue producing sports.

A believe a legit coaches like a Dan Quinn would not accepted a DC unless he demand total independent. Washington is not willing to give that up.

Coaches are leaving because of lack of leadership at the top, they know just like we do Washington isn’t right for the job. They will be unemployed after next season as a member of Washington’s staff. Walking out the door is their vote of no confidence in him, really simple. It’s not Hilton’s job to hire assistant coaches or get them to stay, Hilton’s job is resources and hiring and firing head coaches. The school is not going to fire Washington for one bad season, his fans …many on this board would be up in arms. Furthermore, they aren’t going to pay him $300k then bring in another coach and pay $350-$400k simultaneously. Gentlemen please stop the B****S please. Coaches leave because that's how the coaching field works . They come and go period . No competent assistant coach worth having wants to stay and assistant . The question I would have is why would a competent coach that is worth his or her salt 🧂 would just hang around and remain a assistant, position coach for less pay and not try to move up , lateral or down for a Head Coaching , Coordinator Position and more pay . A lot on here are making a Dust up out of nothing because of the timing but the facts are coaches come and go , unless they have nowhere to go so they just hangout where they are 😆 saabman - Agreed. Coaches move for MANY different reasons. If someone hasn't talked directly to the person, I'm skeptical of whether it's true and even then I'm not 100% since people don't always tell the truth, nothing but the truth, so help them God.

I believe Washington would give it up to what he finds is an experienced and successful former DC. From what I understand Coach Coard was pretty young in coaching and had never been a college DC.

AD's don't hire assistant coaches but they do meet with most or all of the candidates to get a feel for them. And in cases of questionable background issues will have the final say so on the hiring. Hard to evaluate a head coach if you are choosing their assistants for them.

My point was that most AD's are part of the interviewing process and plays apart in the final hiring process .

If I was an AD I would.

This is a moot point. I dont get the sense that Earl is currently on CareerBuilder, trying to find Washington a new D-line coach.
