Coard Is Latest Assistant To Hop Off Exit Ramp
By Semaj Marsh Published: March 15, 2022The A&T football staff was dealt another major offseason blow this week with the news that longtime assistant Courtney Coard has agreed to become the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at rival North Carolina Central. Coard, widely regarded as one of the top defensive minds in college football, returns to his alma mater where he was a four-year starter at defensive tackle for the Eagles from 2004-07. Arguably the most trusted staff member for A&T head coach Sam Washington, Coard was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2018 and played an integral role in shaping the Blue Death Defense. He also served as the Aggies defensive line coach since arriving in Greensboro in 2011 under then-head coach Rod Broadway. Under his leadership, A&T’s run defense quickly emerged as one of best in the Football Championship Subdivision. A&T led the entire nation in run defense in 2013 and ranked in the top five nationally in both 2018 and 2019. Read more: bluedeathvalley.com/coard-is-latest-assistant-to-hop-on-exit-ramp/

Wow!! The writing is on the wall. Coach Washington is clearly in a lame duck year. Do you even pretend to play out the string or start the head coaching job search now?

I'm excited to see these guys move up. They've been loyal servants of Broadway and Washington, they have championships under their belts, and are very deserving of the opportunities that awaits them.

Reportedly, the salary is a move up. ...and complete control of the defense without Washington looking over his shoulder.

NCCU isn't a move up. You go from Co-D. Coordinator to now being the guy, I would say it's a step up!

Reportedly, the salary is a move up. Well, good for Coach Cooard then.

You go from Co-D. Coordinator to now being the guy, I would say it's a step up! Bad "school," worse conference, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't co-defensive coordinator anymore (though imo he should've been, just with Lantz instead of Washington). If the salary is a move up, where's the cheese we supposedly have lying around for our big CAA splash? Did we just let him walk?

All of the vacancies are an opportunity to upgrade the coaching staff. If Hilton doesn't do it, then we are playing lip service to having a championship team OR we are treating this year as a lame duck year. Let's see if Washington hires a D-line coach or a defensive coordinator.
Congratulations, Coach Coard!

No need for us to minimize his move. He'll obviously take what he's learned and apply it to his new position. We should be applauding the brother. By the way, it's NCCU his alma mater?

Reportedly, the salary is a move up. ...and complete control of the defense without Washington looking over his shoulder. That is the key, Washington as acting as co-defensive coordinator
