From google: nerfed (v): cause to be weak or ineffective. "the constant zone running nerfed Michigan's pass rush" (of a video game developer) reduce the power of (a character, weapon, etc.) in a new installment or update of a video game. They play it a lot more like the original song now, and both definitions fit the end result. Don't take my word for it, compare the youtube comments from the 2002 www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPUOQWMDZ-I or 2004 www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2B5X3seh7I version compared to 2018 www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ4S1VLW9DQ&t=66sPeople used to talk about the sound, now they talk about the dance girls, the camera, count drum majors... Nobody liked the song because of the song, they liked our interpretation. That's been completely redone, and the new version has none of the impact. There's a time and a place for everything, and halfway through the song the concept of balance is supposed to go out the window. If the trumpets aren't fighting for their lives to be heard over the lower brass, that song loses its purpose and you'll get people saying their tired of it.

The only problem with Velvet Rope now is that A&T plays it too fast. You need to slow the beginning down more and let it build to a crescendo.
The best version is the one we use at the start of our podcast.

I knew something felt different about the current arrangement but I could never put my finger on it. I agree, it is weaker and less impactful now.

I almost teared up on that Jill Scott. That arrangement is so much what I want this band to be about. Clean and funky. That on top of the Frazier Hall memories. The first time I walked in Frazier and heard all of that sound filling that small hallway outside the band room, there would be folk lining the hallway to get a peek of where all of that was coming from. Ironically, some of those kids could be doppelgangers for my bandmates back in the day. When we left that room we were ready to conquer the world. LOL

I like the renovations in Frazier Hall. I wonder if the band will be moving out of the warehouse back to Frazier.
