Need to increase the numbers Tubas/Sousaphones ; woodwinds trumpets mellophones too many Euphoniums more Trombones Baritones to enhance the sound Numbers of instruments are only important if you want to play louder. The BGMM's sound in fantastic with the number of instruments we currently have! We are not trying to be loud (and wrong) like some of the SWAC band programs. It's not about out blowing the other band... it's about being the better "musicians!" So if our band was the size of NCCU or Sc State's…you would be ok with that?👀

I think he was talking about ratios, and he's got a point. 20 euhoniums and 30 trombones will sound just as bad as 2 euhos and 3 trombones because euphoniums are that much louder than everything else. You could rephrase what he said as we've got too many euphoniums for our instrumentation but you'll never catch me saying that lol. I thought our mellos were great balance wise. We could definitely use more tubas trumpets and trombones. Playing was great, and they did a good job compensating for the balance but it would be better if they didn't have to.

Non-returnables are intricate musical pieces, usually with symphonic arrangements. They are called non-returnables because in a true 5th Qtr battle the opposing band will have difficulty playing a comparable piece after it is played. The power of this kind of piece is that if placed properly it is unexpected by the other band. We don't play those types of songs anymore. Hodge made them a staple. My favorite was Battle Hymn of the Republic.

By the way,the ratings are based on "halftime performances not 5th quarter performance. That's why I'm confused. The BGMM halftime shows were great this past season.

That's true but I'm really referring to the music itself. You can play a non-returnable piece anytime. The name has its origin in the 5th quarter, but the songs themselves can be introduced in a halftime show, in the stands during the game, at a battle of the bands, in a concert, anywhere.

5th quarters have changed. Bandheads don't want non-returnables, they want crank. In fact, you might get booed for playing a march. The most talked about 5th is the BoomBox and it's straight crank with minimal finesse.

Just loud whole notes sandwiched between a melody and a bass line.

FAMU threw "Non returnables" as you call them, gospel and hip-hop which was much more diverse. Straight power and crank is good but, we were taught that the 5th quarter was designed to show your band musicianship, musicality, diversity and book as we called it. I remember how in the early 2000s how BCU would get in a 5th and just crank and play hook songs, and everyone criticized them for not having a book for the 5th quarter. Nowadays, all bands do that, however, BCU still needs to add more hook songs to their book.

NCAT #10 SOUNDS RIGHT TO ME. Any ranking that has us lower than 5th is suspect

They were called non returnables because most bands won't have a good response. Famu's Olympic Fanfare, Gavorkna, Flight of the Bumblebee, Elsa's Processional. Southern's Power, Bohemian Rhapsody... what would you play back to any of those? Skin I'm In was a non returnable, Battlehymn, The Throne Room, Velvet Rope (before we nerfed it). I would love to see us get back to those.
