In the words of Bill Hayes, "you dance with the date that brung ya." If we ain't been using the tight end and been winning anyways then we weren't going to start doing it after a two year layoff. We probably won't see it this weekend either. We probably will start seeing it in tight conference games though, if you catch my drift. As much as it stung watching us ignore numerous competitive offensive advantages, we still had a chance to win running a limited scheme. I suspect we'll keep it close to the vest until we're in the thick of the conference race. Not beating Furman cost us a ranking but if we can get through the conference unscathed (and that's a big if) then it won't matter. More importantly it gives conference opponents less to see on film. And you want to be a playoff contender. That Bill Hayes way of thinking won't work in the playoffs. Having a predictable opponent is easy to prepare for .

That is virtually impossible. We only threw to 6 different people (including 1 pass to Hunt and 2 passes to Martin) in the 2019 Celebration Bowl and we scored 64 points. Few things: 1. It's not virtually impossible. Just needs to be a point of emphasis to make teams have to cover lots of people and not be able to use anyone outside what they need to be doing like blitzing, shooting gaps, etc. 2. As a matter of fact, Dobson (83) was the one wide open in the end zone when Jalen fumbled from the hit from the guy who came up from covering him. 3. I also believe you'll see Dobson wide open on the play where the corner blitzed and sacked Jalen on the play action with Jah. Granted I'm not sure Jalen would have had enough time to see and throw but they weren't covering Dobson, even with someone else. 4. Slants to WRs towards the middle are much different than hitting the TEs in the middle and seams because the WRs are typically covered by DBs while LBs typically cover TEs. The LBs will be kept honest more often. If the TE goes down the seam the safeties have to stay there and not double on the outside so much. Another way to keep them honest and have better chances on the outside. 5. Also, Trey Scott and Lockhart were/are both just WRs playing the TE position and caught most of their balls going to the outside, except 1 or 2. Lockhart did catch the TD pass against Elon doing what we're talking about here (running the seam) and he was WIDE OPEN. I think that's all I've got...for now! Outstanding assessment. You can go all the way back to Broadway or even before, and you will see that Nobody covers A&T's TE ( when they do run routes) because the Competition knows that even with in the QB's progressions the TE is not an option. I'm not going to place the blame on the QB because I have seen this numerous times and in my opinion your quarterback already has his receivers in mind when he breaks the huddle and the tight end is not in the equation even if he is standing wide open which he is most of the time because he filled the vacant area that the linebacker vacated . How the Hale can a QB overlook a player 10 to 15yd from him in his progressions . I like the Deep ball also but I'm a student of the game . I'll take a dink and dump quarterback any day over a long ball thrower that leaves plays on the field .

Well, if we have any shot of winning on Friday, we may have to dink and dunk our way through a few series instead of lining up in the shotgun and going all RPO on first and second down.

The most pivotal point in this thread …..If the linebackers are feasting on your running game throwing a few quick completions to a TE will always keep the linebacker honest ……Furman was shooting lb’s through gaps the entire game passes to the TE and running back screens change what a def can do with their linebackers It don't matter if the QB can't throw an accurate pass. Fowler was missing everyone 1st half

Not to mention if he had not shorted that long pass the fumble would have never happened.

I'm not as concerned with the talent. It was the first game and Fowler's first start. He along with many others needed to get those jitters out. It's the scheme and adjustments to the defense I'm concerned about. The OC just needs to be able adjust just like Furman adjusted after the first couple of series.

Fowler mobility is very limited so I think the TE was held in for protection.

Fowler mobility is very limited so I think the TE was held in for protection. I thought the same thing. Again, its just ONE GAME. But Fowler didn't look very agile and at times appeared even statuesque. In that fumble play at the goal line I couldn't help but think "if they are gonna run it, why not put Ifedi in?" Again....ONE GAME...but still waiting to see that Fowler can do it with his feet before he takes off running and I'm comfortable with it.

Fowler mobility is very limited so I think the TE was held in for protection. BS !! I get tired of hearing that EXCUSE . There D-line got no more penetration then A&T's D-line and yes they ran a blitz package from time to time , so did we the only difference between us and them was they made adjustments. Being truthful they used plays that we used at Page . Read the LB and if he moves inside stint outside, if he blitzes occupy this area for the catch and run the ball should be out in less then 2 seconds or one or two step drop . So don't give me that TE protection BS .

I think Fowler is mobile enough to deliver passes to the TE. In today's world, TEs are lethal weapons for offences. You have seen him run the ball in a home game, as well as throw a TD pass. So, he is mobile enough to avoid some tacklers. The overall offense and defense have to get better, if they plan to win any games. This would be true whether they are playing teams from the MEAC or Big South. GET BETTER!!

Fact of the matter is that we're loaded at WR & TE. The question is whether they'll use them appropriately. I'm especially, wondering why we STILL don't use our TEs in the short passes and seams. I assume our coaching staff is also aware that our Tight End is open for short passes over the center but choose not to pass to them because they just can't catch. That has to be the reason! They can pass block but can't catch squat! That's the only reason for us not taking that offensive option during our games.

I don't believe that. There is plenty of room on that practice field where they can take TEs to practice catching passes. All kinds of passes: over the shoulder, back shoulder, low passes where the receiver has to hit the ground, high passes where jumping is needed, slightly behind the receiver, passes that require adjustments. You can bet our opponents have them.

When was the last time the Aggies had a pass catching TE or all conference TE?
