Both teams had about the same amount of penalties but, ours seemed to hurt us way more. And the two targeting penalties were flat out wrong, neither was targeting. They out executed us and that was the difference.

My two cents is that this is normal under Washington. We always struggle at the beginning of the year. We go from looking like a confused pee wee football team, to scoring 40,50,60 points..
I would like to see him have better beginnings. Rust, pandemic, first game fitters whatever it does not make sense to look that bad. In previous years we made plays to win games where we lost in every category statically. Yesterday we did not make those plays. We had the opportunities
On another note after week one big south scores I see no need to panick. Everyone lost w the exception of schools that played D2 opponents. And Kennesaw St barely beat a school that I never heard of in my life.
If the normal progression takes place we should be fine.

I do like that he said …Washington….. the inability to get a play in on time was most irritating… I am sure he chewed Barnette’s azz out. This has been an issue for a while …. I am remember Raynard throwing his hands up waiting on a call. That lead to players lined up in the wrong spot and probably poor blocking schemes by o-line …..Barnette better get it together!! This been a issue for a minute

I would have loved for us to have played St Matthews Bible college to open up after a 623 day drought but it is what it is. I agree with Tyball and thrillas analysis of the game. I'm not worried. Winner I feel your pain but, they would not have shown us who we are, now, and what we need to fix now.

Great call baseball had we played some lowly D2 or D3 all the glaring issues would have been hidden under a 56-6 score. And we would rolled into the Duke game with a different mindset and they would have exploded our mental / game plan mistakes more than Furman.
I am 100% convinced we are better than Furman we simply have way more talent we just executed poorly so we lost.
Coach Washington will clean up the controllables this week

We're not better than Furman (now)........in 1-2 months, maybe so. Better talent doesn't make you the better team.

I agree ….if we don’t execute any better we would not beat them a month from today either

Veteran qb play back then. Plus we had our starting defensive ends and an easier opening game.
Washington ain’t scared. We might start 0-1 a lot from now on or might start 1-0 and shoot up 10 spots in the rankings immediately. Either way Washington wants to play strong teams out the gate.
I doubt Broadway would’ve gone for this game, especially after a whole year off.
Imo whether they were stuffing the run or not we should’ve kept trying. Eventually you pop one. I’m sure Maine would love to have that third and short back where he didn’t follow his blockers. That was 20 yards easy. Once that happens…

I think we are beginning to see the void that Broadway left. Undisciplined football was something he just did not stand for. We have them in 3rd and 8 make the stop out of bounds and our #24 picks up a personal foul penalty, those a dagger penalties. You can’t have those and win championships. Our line did NOT play well and Martin is not healthy. I didn’t wanna sound an alarm but, while in Greensboro during camp, I saw him on crutches...so whatever happened then is still affecting him now.

Once that happens… Help me out everyone keeps saying Martin did not follow his blockers but why are we in a shotgun formation hand off which takes longer to execute as the back receive the ball deeper in the back field when we have a 6”4 235 QB and we need 1 yard ? Furman called a simple run blitz on that play so they were gone stop it in the backfield or give up a long run

I hate to lose and if you check my past notes, I've said that after every lost. And it typically takes me a few hours to calm down and think rationale again. Now that I've had a good night sleep, I'm willing to accept that we got beat because our opponent had "live" games this spring and we were shorthanded. I have no doubt we'll get better but it may take a few more games. Until then, let's not panic...yet! Lol

On a good note, we had less unsportsmanlike penalties than usual.

Bad calls were frequent yesterday and we still had a chance to win.
