According to Coach Washington, our NCCU DE transfer is on the roster. In light of this, we have tremendous depth on the defensive line.
There's going to be tremendous competition on the D-Line. However, could we see Cox, McDaniel or a few of our other DEs play with their hand out of the dirt as an OLB in a 3-4 set?
NOTE: Yes, I know our Rovers and SS' will get the majority of the snaps as the "OLBs." However, wouldn't it be nice to play Duke this fall with a front 7 that rivals the size Duke would encounter from FBS teams?
What say ye?

The transfers we got, and I expect will be playing in the spring games, should make it possible. But only IF the kids are able to master our 4-3 first. Maybe use the 3-4 as a periodic change-up.

We're not big enough up front with a true nose tackle and larger DE/DTs to occupy 2 gaps in the run game. I have no issue with us running a situational 3-3 on obvious passing downs like we have in the past. But consistent 3-4?

You have to be careful jumping to a 3-4 defense if you don't have size that can eat up space. Also, you must have big linebackers as well. I'll just say this, see the Cowboys defense in 2020, God awful against the run. They were not big enough upfront and opponents were able to run them over. I'm not sure we have the types of D-lineman that are needed for a 3-4. Our advantage has always been our get-off on the snap and we have small-ish linebackers that can run. In my opinion, the 3-4 scheme would not fit our personnel.

You down linemen must be able to control the A-B-C gaps having size and athleticism upfront is Paramount you maybe able to get away with light and quick DE's for a moment here and there but 3oo and up has to command the nose . Do we have any 300 pounders that are athletic enough to play the nose and occupy blockers and keep them off the linebackers at the next level .

The difference this year is we can substitute folks in and out of our base defense and their is no drop in talent! Thats what gone allow us to not just win but to excel and beat higher competition down the road

I thought Robert Porcher was brought in from Va Tech to play the nose. He has the size to eat up blockers.

Pringle and Branch are 300 pounders...if that is what you are looking for...anyone at practice friday or saturday ? I believe Pringle & Branch can play the NT and the two 3-stars we got (Elijah Brown & Kyiev Bennermon) can play DT in an FCS 3-4 defense. Again, I think it would be something we only play periodically, IF they can learn it. Of course, some of the others can, possibly, play 3-4 DT...Porcher, Karfa Kaba & Tyquan Johnson. Saying again...We LOADED! If they all are on the team/show up.

Pringle and Branch are 300 pounders...if that is what you are looking for...anyone at practice friday or saturday ? We run a 43-Under, which shares similar principles to a 34 D. With Pringle and Branch as the "space-eaters" on the DL, it's possible to run a defensive set where McDaniel or Cox are playing with their hand out the dirt. those guys are going to be playing the 1 or 2 tech DT in the 43 setups we already run, freeing up our LBS to slash into gaps and blow up running plays.

To small for the nose ; not saying that he could not be successful at the nose position but his size would be a hindrance as the game progresses. MSU linemen wwould eat him alive from watching there play against us last year.
