Chizik was definitely playing the role of facilitator because he works for ESPN now, that's his main job. But they tried to tie in Wash as much as they could. He had opportunities at times where I think he could have provided more insight at least on the defensive side, instead of sayin "yeah", "you're right" LOL.

He just needed more prep work before going on a national stage.
I think if he ever gets a similar opportunity, Coach Washington will be much sharper.
Doing live TV commentating is not easy.

Tip No. 1: Pick one thing and let that be your niche for the entire broadcast.Since Washington is a former NFL defensive back, he should have just focused on every time a DB made a important play in this game and then offered his insight on the kind of technique the guy used. You've got three other coaches there with bigger egos and larger profiles. Dont compete with them; just find a consistent way to add something to the convo. What if Coach had said what if some that Alabama/ Ohio State talent would chose HBCUs how would that have turned out. He could have done in a way that provocative yet innocent and relevant.

Actually, that brings me to my second point of advice.
Tip No. 2: Have a couple of anecdotes and one-liners stuffed in your back pocket.
This goes back to the overall preparation. Just like a "freestyle" rapper will come armed to a battle with pre-written lyrics, a good on-air commentator will already have some lighthearted material on standby.
This will help you relax and make sure you always have something colorful to say in the heat of the moment.
Washington could have made a joke about how he'd love to recruit some of the top guys from both of those schools and the how different his facilities are at the FCS level. Then he could have inserted a humble brag about some of the guys he has coached that remind him one of the star players in that championship game.
It's pretty much like having a mental cheat sheet, but it is something that all broadcasters do.
You never go into a live event and just totally wing it ... even if there is no script involved.

Number 1a: realize that two of the coaches you're broadcasting with YOU RECRUIT AGAINST and they also have no desire to lose transfers to you. Clawson and Freeze ain't thinkin' bout Ayantee all that much when it comes down to it, but they are thinkin' bout Ayantee just enough to "claw" their way to "freezing" coach out a little bit. Wherever you can gain an edge you go for it. We were supposed to play Liberty this year and we're playing Wake a few years down the road. All three coaches (hell, probably all four coaches) knew that and I'd say Clawson and Freeze took advantage of it.

Yep, Washington went into this gunfight armed with only a water pistol.
I wonder who was the liaison at ESPN who invited him to participate and what did they tell him beforehand.
Hell, I already know the answer to my question. It probably was Tiffany Greene since they are related.

Sam's definitely a talker. The man was the best meme of the year a couple years ago. Hell, it still stands the test of time.
I bet if he gets the hookup again "Sam's not a talker" will not be said at all....

Also he may have been hampered by COVID if he did in fact have it.

Chalk it up as a learning experience, build on it and move on. He's better for it.

Not germane to the topic, but this sound bite never gets old 😂 Another funny thing is that, a couple yrs ago, I heard my daughter and her friends looking at one of their cell phones and saying it! I asked them what they were doing and they showed it to me. They had no idea it was A&T and were in shock when I told them about it. At the time, my daughter and a couple of her friends were was dead set on going to A&T and they "cheered" about it!
