This brings me back to a question I started in 1967 when we became a "University"... why do we have the longest college name in the nation? Did we need to be North Carolina A&T State University? Don't get me wrong, I love the name but it's a "branding" nightmare. Especially when we are the only damn A&T around! Why do we keep hanging on to "North Carolina A&T" in sporting events as if not to confuse the audience at Georgia A&T or Illinois A&T or even Maryland A&T. (BTW those schools don't exist) Everybody I know, fans, alumni, enemies, drug dealers and the corner hooker knows exactly who A&T is. So why can't we just return to what works... A&T!

Well could be the geography thing. Remember being in Madison Square Garden 1969 A&T was constantly being referred to as Carolina A&T. Was in high school on Christmas visit to my Aunt who chided me because I was decked out in a three piece suit.

So why can't we just return to what works... A&T! The same reason someone thought we had to put half the alphabet on the front of the new football jerseys.

Part of expanding our brand (which we it appears we're attempting to do on a large scale level) should be to capitalize on the fact that we are THE A&T. We shouldn't have administrators etc. referring to us as North Carolina A&T and trying to say North Carolina real fast or NC A&T or N-Cat or whatever. There are at least two USCs and two UNCs I can think of off the top of my head but they have no problem referring to themselves as USC or UNC and disregarding the other one. That goes for countless other schools too. We have the luxury of competing with no one for the name A&T. We should definitely use it to our advantage. When somebody says "what is that" or "where is that" then that's the time we can educate them on the school and the history, or that's the time they can google and find out more. Spoon feeding them North Carolina as part of our name tells them enough to where those who haven't heard of us won't bother to ask or look any further. If it was my call EVERYTHING associated with the school would have the old interlocking symmetrical A&T. The power of that interlocking A&T was amazing to me. It meant something. The current one is cartoonish imo. Don't get me started on the yellow dog head. But I digress... We're the only A&T, why wouldn't we use that to our advantage?

If you live in the state of NC or in HBCU communities, I would agree that everyone knows A&T. However, from a national branding stand point, I think it would be difficult to drop NC from the name. Remember most HBCUs are in the Southeast. I have lived in Central Florida for over 30 yrs and I can assure you that most people outside of HBCU Alumni and avid sports fans know very little about A&T. Heck, I can remember when A&T played in the SWAC/MEAC Championship, one of the local radio stations had a promo ad referring to us NC AT&T (save that for another post). Having said that, a good compromise may be more promotional branding of the A&T lock inbedded in the silhouette of the state of NC (like Corbetts Sports center). I have always loved that but rarely see it anywhere else.

For our athletic programs, we could only use "A&T." For the past 30 years I've watched UNC-Charlotte change their sports name and logo to avoid being confused with UNC-Chapel Hill. They're now branding themselves as the "Charlotte forty niners." I think for athletics we need to keep it short and sweet... just A&T! I think we're trying to hard to overthink this branding thing. Call our team what is easy and simple to remember... The A&T Aggies!
