Saw the ACC Woman's 2019 Freshman of the Year in one of the photos-Townsend 57.86 400mh NCAA 2nd team AA. We are out for blood pittsburghpanthers.com/news/2019/6/17/townsend-named-acc-track-field-womens-freshman-of-the-year.aspxPITTSBURGH – After an impressive first season on the track for the University of Pittsburgh track and field team, Sydni Townsend was tabbed as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Outdoor Freshman of the Year, as selected by the conference's coaches and announced on Monday afternoon. "With all the amazing freshman athletes that compete in the ACC each year, being selected as the best of the best is more than impressive," said head coach Alonzo Webb. "To be noticed and selected by the head coaches in the ACC as the best female freshman athlete is a testament to her talent, work ethic and competitiveness. I'm really proud of what Sydni has accomplished so far and is so deserving of this award among many other deserving athletes." Townsend becomes the first Pitt athlete in program history to earn an ACC postseason award, Freshman of the Year, after a strong season that culminated with Second Team All-American honors in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, TX. The Philadelphia, PA native made her debut at the NCAA Outdoor Championships just over a week ago and had an impressive showing as she was able to post the 14th best time in the 400m hurdles semifinal to become an All-American for the first time in her career. With the Second Team All-America honors, Townsend became the first Pitt female hurdler since Julianna Reed in 2006 to earn Outdoor All-American honors as she crossed the line in 57.92 seconds, the third best finish among all freshman in the event. "Sydni is setting a standard for our team that I'm certain will only help us to continue to grow," stated Webb. "What sets her apart is that she doesn't compete like a freshman, she competes like a division I athlete, which is what I ask of all of our first-year athletes."

i predict that the "new track" will be a "game changer" for our program. the new track will be akin to tossing gasoline onto a program that's already "on fire". that's why i was so anxious to see the new track surface completed in aggie stadium.
now that the new track is imminent, i honestly believe that a "d1 national championship" in track and field will be within our reach over the next 2 to 3 years, if not sooner...

Coach Ross not playing around National Championship or Bust..The Big South will be mostly preseason warm ups in most events if no major injuries occur.

Winning the Big South may not be as easy as we think. The thing about track and field is you only face all the conference schools once a year. High Point had a meet in 2019 that NCAT attended and a few big south schools but many of the top Aggies didn't run or ran in training events . Same thing when we went to Elon ( where almost no starters ran). Most starters/ top runners were out of state. Thus the only way I could make a comparison was by looking at times. But here is the rub. In events like the Steeple Chase 1,600 3K 5K 10K Javelin discus pole vault hammer throw shot put we did not have better performances. Thus we need the other schools to split those points while we continue to dominate any event from the 100-800 meters. In the past , Hampton would challenge us in those areas. HP has throwers and distance runners. I think the women will have a harder time than the men. Your thoughts

Your thoughts It's normal behavior to split up the team giving your 1 ,2 and possibly 3 runners the opportunity to compete in the larger meets especially when they have met USTFCCCA and NCAA Regional and National Criteria . This way you get to Gage the progression of the younger and older athletes that are not quite there yet . You are correct the distance events and throws , Shotput , Javelin , Hammer , Heptathlon and Pentathlon have always been HBCUS Achilles heel for both Male and Female. We have shown a little bit of progress 3,4,10K and 1,600 but little in the Water Jumps ( Steeplechase ) Heptathlon & Pentathlon, Javelin and Hammer Throw . If A&T can place 1 or 2 in the finals of each Distance event and throws and dominate the Sprint's ,relays and Jumps it is possible that A&T can win a National championship as long as the athletes meet the USTFCCCA and NCAA Track and Field qualifying criteria .

Thanks numberonebrave for the great track pictures. The only way I can experience our world-class track teams is through your pictures. I really appreciate getting to see these young kids before they become famous! Looking forward to seeing your next pictures. Please stay safe!
