McCain and Martin: will they be back in 2021?

Do you think will both guys come back if the NCAA grant them another year due to the virus?

Time for them to move on...keeping all those seniors on scholarship for another year is too expensive. Additionally, we have other young guns ready to step up.

A lot will depend on a couple of things. First their individual situations will play a major role in any decision as well on what the NFL decides to do going forward with their draft if the entire college football season ends up being canceled across the board.

If you were them and you had your degree (Mac working on his Master's)... would you come back to college or sign with an agent and train for a pro career?

Martin has already said he would be out. Mac, needs game tape. He's not getting drafted after last year.

It's an interesting question for either. Do you stay and risk injury? Do you take out an insurance policy just in case?

If you stay you have a year's size and growth and should theoretically be that much more dominant, thereby increasing your good game tape and your chances to be drafted. Plus playing a Big South conference schedule, no matter how fair or unfair, would probably be more favorably viewed by teams looking to draft than playing a MEAC schedule.

Methinks it'd be difficult to be drafted a year out from football when your last meaningful season of play was in the MEAC. Not impossible, but difficult. If they dip, they'll be lucky to get free agent deals.

If Mac finished his Master's.... no need to return for a 6th year in college.

Mac has enough good tape from 2017 and 2018 (especially FBS games) to show that he's an NFL caliber talent. Teams are smart enough to know that ACLs take 2 seasons to fully recover from, so the 2019 tape comes with text.

Would Mac get drafted? Probably not. But I believe Mac has a really good chance of being an UDFA. And if he's playing the long-game... UDFA contracts are 3 years before he would hit restricted free agency. And even if he's on a practice squad... still making $110K+ for a full season.

No need for Mac to put himself at risk for a full college season after getting his Master's. He needs to chase the dream while he's got his youth.

Again... if you're going to be a late round pick, it's often better to be a UDFA instead. There's more flexibility to go to a better team fit.

Mac would be 23 in 2021. If he was on a practice squad as an UDFA in 2021, he'd still be eligible for a 3-year UDFA deal from 2022-24 and eligible for restricted FA heading into 2025 at age 27.

If Mac was to play an extra year and (hopefully) get drafted in 2022 at age 24, he would be under rookie contract for 4 years and eligible for unrestricted FA heading into 2026 at age 28.

So by betting on himself and not delaying the pro journey, the reward is an extra year of veteran-level NFL pay. That's a big deal... and a major factor in why Bam left early. High risk... high reward.

For ME... the only reason I would want Mac back would be because he would make A&T Football better in 2021. And that's a purely selfish reason on my part that wouldn't be in Mac's best professional interests, IMO.

If Bell didn't even get a free agent invite after his storied career and great performance in the CB, there is not a lot of hope that McCain will fair much better based on how he ended last season.

I personally think he needs more tape to impress the NFL scouts.

DSA Mac has to show that he has fully recovered from that injury. Mac was not even close to his old self and his speed to the ball was a step slow and a lot of times he lacked fluency coming out of his backpedal especially turning to his left . Yes he could get a UFAC 4sure but if he wants to get drafted he needs one more season under his belt because he has a lot of things to work out and on . Also with the continual shorting of training camps it's more of a what can you do for me right now atmosphere and as always in situations like that the nod goes to the FBS P-5 players over a FCS player still getting his footing back .

I thought about that. But there are some differences in Bell's situation vs. Mac.

Aside from not having a Pro Day, the big thing that hurt Bell was the notion about his speed and the so-so tape against Duke. Even though Bell did come off of a foot injury the year before in 2018, it's not the same as coming off of an ACL repair.

Mac was definitely on the NFL radar after the ECU win following the Charlotte win the year before. Two pick-6s in FBS wins and All-American status in 2017 and 2018 will get you there. And if a healthy Mac gets to work out in the 2021 NFL Draft cycle, there won't be any concerns about speed or agility.

I think Mac's pre-injury tape in 2017 and 2018 works better for him than Bell's tape. And the ACL injury is something that scouts will take into consideration.

Even in the ECU game, Mac displayed some issues with his coverage skills. Remember he was actually beat on that pick six play, but the QB threw the ball behind the WR who was open in the endzone.

I definitely believe he has NFL talent, but it was not a slam dunk that NFL scouts felt the same way. He missed the 2018 Celebration Bowl and played awful in the 2019 Celebration Bowl.

He is gonna have to change some perceptions if he hopes to leapfrog over potential DB prospects.

Saab... All those things are fair. The 2021 workout process will sort out a lot of that.

But the main thing. We WANT him to get drafted. But he doesn't NEED to be drafted to be a successful NFL player.

And a NFL team is much more likely to be willing to pay a FCS player 2 years removed from an ACL tear $10-$25K guaranteed money than the nearly $100K signing bonus that Bam got as a 7th-round pick.

The big game on the 2021 schedule would be Duke again. That would be the only game that would really pop to scouts unless we made a big run in the FCS playoffs and get to James Madison or NDSU. I just don't think Mac gains much by trying to scratch into being a 6th-7th round pick in 2022 instead of rolling the dice in 2021.
