GREENSBORO — All of a sudden, the MEAC is a conference in crisis.

N.C. A&T’s announcement in February that it would leave the league after the upcoming 2020-21 school year and join the Big South is part of a troubling trend for the MEAC, which is losing members at an alarming rate.

MEAC leaders held a Zoom news conference this morning to ease fears that the league was on the verge of collapse and announce expansion efforts in a smaller geographic area around its remaining core members.


The MEAC has hired a consulting firm, Collegiate Sports Associates, to help search for new members.

“As far as timeline, we’re certainly moving with some urgency,” said Dr. Wayne Frederick, the president of Howard University. “We expect the first aspect (an internal audit) to be done by mid-July, and the second aspect in terms of adding institutions will be dependent upon what’s available.”

The MEAC needs new blood.

1. So first the MEAC has aquired consulting firm that would help search for new members. They want a report by Mid July. That's less then 3 weeks. What schools are they going to find that will give them a OK we are interested joining the MEAC conf. in three week. Good luck on that buddy!!!!!!

2. Dennis cleared up the D1 status."D-I leagues must have a minimum of seven members, and FCS football leagues must have at least six teams."
He also even if the count would go below 6 NCAA would give you a grace period of 2 years to find schools. Dennis said "It’s not like you’re cut off immediately."

3. Celebration bowl:
The swac has 12 football schools to Meac 6. How can you compete with a conf. that is twice your size and really have a chance to win. The meac crediability of bringing the best school to represent your conf. is a far gone conclusion.

Now get this VA Finest. According to Dennis ESPN is willing to renew the contract. Really Dennis I think you lying out your a$$. They still have not gotten a big time sponsor since losing air force and why are they waiting so long to renew the contract. Man you full of BS.

Dennis Thomas "This is the last year of the contract. We’ve been in contact with ESPN and they want to renew."

4. PWI coming to the MEAC

Negro Please!! There is no current FCS PWI that is going to a broke down Black conf. He said they have been looking for a PWI for 18. How is that been working out for you buddy Thomas. Man is a joke. He must think we stupid to believe his BS

It would have to be a D3 PWI or maybe a jr college PWI that would consider. I don't think a D2 Pembroke or a Catawba would consider the MEAC.


5 . CIAA is intesting is expanding there club according to CIAA official "Clyde Doughty Jr., the Bowie State athletics director and president of the CIAA management council, said the conference would definitely look at expansion and at MEAC schools."

6.Holding on. There will be other schools leaving stay tune. "The schools that remain, I’m sure they’re going to be contacted (by outsiders)." Gl

Bro, the CIAA makes so much sense for Coppin and UMES...I don’t understand why they don’t leave. So many CIAA alums in that area...playing Bowie State, VSU, VUU and Lincoln would do so much for their basketball atmosphere.

Being D1 has not helped their enrollment...Bowie State and VSU have twice the enrollment of both universities.

Being D1 has not helped their enrollment...Bowie State and VSU have twice the enrollment of both universities.

MESU and Coppin would lose out by moving down to the CIAA/D-2 . Gone will be the Basketball money games and possibly the NCAA tournament money . Staying D-1 they could still compete against the Northern and Southern CIAA programs but moving down will surely hinder and limit their opportunities.

I guess I would like to know ( maybe 4lx can answer the question) what cost savings would Coppin or UMES have by returning to D2 v staying D1? Are any savings likely to be greater or less than the basketball money games? Could they offer fewer sports for instance ?

Div 1 must sponsor a minimum of 14 sports and Div 2 a minimum of 10.
