That was a fascinating read. It was yet another example of the federal government fight for Black people's rights vs the southern states, 110 years after the Civil War. Dowdy was hoodwinked into thinking we were getting a "teaching facility" and we get a related activity "Animal Sciences" in lieu of the school. The UNC Board made a promise that they would set black enrollment target of 10.4% at white institutions and that ultimately satisfied Dowdy and the feds. Oh, and guess what the current enrollment % (45 years later) at NC State is: The enrolled student population at North Carolina State University at Raleigh is 63% White, 5.92% Black or African American. No school no increased enrollment. The feds were hoodwinked also. The more I learn about white leaders in my home state the more I ... At least I now know who the Webb building is named for, the man who fought like hell to get that veterinary school at A&T. Dr. Dowdy was no fool. He was very intelligent yet humble. In fact I recall the hate directed toward him from the local political machine concerning the smoke from the furnace for the heating of the campus as though it was his fault. I recall Dr. Dowdy replying we burn coal and the result is the smoke from the burning of the coal. Then I recall from some of the elders how all the HBCUs would have to go to Raleigh to make their case for funding only to be humiliated in the process. Yet Dr. Dowdy achieved his funding without losing his dignity. Again this is the hate due to our ontology and relevance for which we do not and should not apologize. There is a reason why we have not been funded like we should when you recall the work of Dr. George Washington Carver. They know that we are not inferior and that God did not curse us. In fact God has blessed us tremendously for giving sanctuary to his Son in Africa who was born on the run with a bounty on his head. This current climate demands something from us again to effect another tectonic social change paradigm shift at this crucial period.
The most noble and intelligent of us can be hoodwinked.

The most noble and intelligent of us can be hoodwinked. My Brother I hear you. Perhaps you may need to read the Eulogy by Judge Joe Williams and the remarks of Dr. Gloria Scott at his funeral. During that particular time the future of the HBCUs were in a struggle for survival. Dr. Dowdy did his utmost to ensure the survival of Ayantee as well as other HBCUs. In fact the current reality Plandamit etiology was during that period with emphsis upon population control. Matter of fact a lot of the Vietnam Vets educated a lot of us as to the reality of the times. Perhaps you have read the book The Choice by Samuel Yette which told the truth of that period. I remember hearing about the King Alfred Plan on the yard in the student union. As a matter of fact I was in the office Dr. Nance at South Carolina State when that school was under attack. Dr Nance talked about how many of the majority schools resistance was so resound that they were choosing which judge would hear their case toward the decree mandates. So while I may respect your view point maybe this is what Martin meant when he talked the burning house. Yet I believe that we have to refuse to be what they want us to be for in the final analysis in the words Dr John Henrik Clark "we have no friends..."

Thanks for the references. The sad fact is many of our schools are in survival mode now and are constantly, under attack. For example I have no idea how Elizabeth City State still operates because they are almost entirely at the state's mercy. When you're always on the defensive you accept far less than you deserve in the spirit of compromise, when the other side knows they are being way less than truthful and certainly not generous.

When others have all the power they don't have to "hoodwink" the powerless to take advantage of them. No more than our enslaved ancestors were "hoodwinked" to work centuries for free. Let's remember that back then it was as much about the survival of the institution as it was about equity.

Let's remember that back then it was as much about the survival of the institution as it was about equity. Right on and it remains so today in all facets of our lives despite our economic status. We are all in the same boat. Again A&T is not being funded as it should be given its status and there is a reason for that which is the reason the School of Nanotechnology joined with UNC-G. I would hope that our schools of sciences would not be about the business of using science for the detriment of humanity like others have in the development of viruses such as AIDS now COV-19. When I ponder the reality of now it is obvious that this system is broken beyond repair without a mass uprising. For instance the people of Flint have been tricked to the tune of $6000 and none of the culprits have been imprisoned and the water still remains contaminated.

WOW...I learned a lot about the history and function of our Animal Science program through this thread.
I still think that we (along with WSSU, ECSU, FSU and NCCU) should be suing the state of North Carolina for a century of underfunding, among other things, like the state of Maryland was sued.

I expect some of the uptick has to do with more people having dogs...sometimes referred to as COVID Dogs. I mean, we got one mostly for my youngest daughter due to online school, her sister not being here anymore (Aggie), etc. And might I say the dog (Chocolate Lab) is wreakin' havoc in my house...chewing, tearing, pottyin', etc. etc. etc.

I pick her up in 2 weeks but it’s bad when the trainer calls her “wild.”

If there are more articles regarding the vet shortage maybe that will be what is needed to get the state to fund a school for us.
