First Cancellations Emerge for Major College FootballBy Billy Witz The New York Times June 17, 2020
Four college football games involving historically black colleges and universities have been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, making them the first casualties of major college football leading up to a season that appears tenuous just over two months before its scheduled kickoff.
Two neutral-site games — Southern University versus Tennessee State in Detroit on Sept. 5 and Jackson State versus Tennessee State a week later in Memphis — have been canceled along with Southern’s home game on Sept. 12 against Florida A&M. Jackson State also was forced to cancel its Sept. 5 season opener against Langston University, because Langston and other N.A.I.A. schools have been prohibited from playing before Sept. 12.

"...But with coronavirus cases spiking in various states, it remains unclear whether fans will be able to attend.
In some cases, broadcast networks may ensure the games are played as scheduled.
Dennis Thomas, the commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, said that ESPN planned to still go forward with a game between one of his conference’s schools, South Carolina State, and Grambling, on Sept. 6 at the Atlanta Braves’ former stadium.
“If you don’t have the backing of a multimedia company, the numbers are not going to make sense,” Thomas said."From the New York Times: www.nytimes.com/2020/06/17/sports/ncaafootball/coronavirus-college-football-games-canceled.html?fbclid=IwAR13fXvxq4pmX75MVdsTHDFZ998jWS6WtDb6poiW236__AzS5dQxkmQ2NVw

Well, I was optimistic until this week. It looks like Covid-19 isn’t done with the USA. Some states are on the rise, and people will be traveling, be diligently about your safety!

North Carolina is really spiking big time. We will have to wait to see if politicians will act prudently or not. When and if we open the university will be determined by the politicians: Governor, State Legislature, Board of Governors and General Administration. Two in that group can screw up a good wet dream. Athletics will be notifying folks about tickets on June 25. Hopefully, that will give fans some hope.

Florida is heading in the wrong direction with the virus. How will that affect FAMU? As I mentioned some time ago about the absolute closeness of the athletes to one another. How will teams be able to protect the players from contracting the disease and spreading it to their families and friends?

Governor Cooper is a bit more cautious but even he might bend to public pressure.

How will teams be able to protect the players from contracting the disease and spreading it to their families and friends? The governors of Florida and Georgia are puppets of Trump. They don't care about the health of the citizens of their states when it comes down to money.
Concerning football/collegiate athletics, check out this article in today's Miami Herald...‘Football may not happen this year,’ Fauci says as coronavirus outbreaks continueBY MIKE STUNSON MIAMI HERALD JUNE 18, 2020 09:06 AM, UPDATED 55 MINUTES AGO
Don’t start planning your tailgating parties just yet. Dr. Anthony Fauci gave some dire news Thursday morning regarding the future of football.
As football players at all levels are preparing to return to the gridiron this fall, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said football may not take place unless there are major precautions taken.
“Unless players are essentially in a bubble — insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day — it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall,” Fauci said on CNN. “If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year...”

I can see the Classics being cancelled because of the timing, economics and black fear, but why would Southern cancel a home game?

I can see the Classics being cancelled because of the timing, economics and black fear, but why would Southern cancel a home game? Because that game would probably be sold out under normal conditions. If you can't have fans, or just 1/4 of an expected sell out, you are better served by moving that game to a different year.
Also, on that same date in Baton Rouge, LSU is hosting Texas in a sold out game. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up doing the same thing.

...but will Texas want to play (in these unhealthy conditions)?? Of course. It's Texas football. You might be right, but you have to remind yourself that these are the same guys who want to eliminate, “The eyes of Texas“ from football games. This is a different breed of U-Texas athletes that we are talking about nowadays! And it’s a non-conference game. I am not so sure that they want to play in a stadium full of virus infected fans. LSU will not diminish the number of fans at the stadium because of the virus. You can expect 100,000 people at that game with absolutely no social-distancing. SEC teams don’t care. They will play even if they have to have 22 respirators lined up on each sideline. But the Longhorns might have 2nd thoughts.
