Just months after losing North Carolina A&T, the MEAC is one Board of Trustees’ decision away from losing another of its top programs.
Florida A&M’s Board of Trustees is expected to vote on a new plan that would swing the school from the MEAC to the SWAC, according to a presentation from AD Kortne Gosha. The BOT will hear from a special committee on athletics on Wednesday, June 3.
If approved at the meeting, FAMU would give the MEAC a year’s notice and enter the SWAC in July 2021, the same month that A&T is set to join the Big South.
Travel is a big concern. FAMU stated that a benchmarking study from 2020 determined that it would be better off in the SWAC than the MEAC. The report cites a number of issues with the MEAC, including the loss of Hampton and North Carolina A&T along with travel concerns and “prohibitive deals in place that don’t benefit the universities they are supposed to serve” when it comes to TV, apparel and sponsorships.

If Rattlers leave what direction will Meac go... Based on past MEAC reactions, I don't expect them to do anything except redo the schedule. The MEAC Administration hasn't done anything in the past to deal with schools leaving and I don't expect them to do anything now. They will continue to do nothing!

I would think the fees to maintain administrative operations would have to go up for remaining members. The best they could do in my humble opinion is merge with another conference. I wonder how the CB agreement is impacted given three marquee members leaving.

Yet, everyone gave us hell for making a “lateral” move. Interesting...

(WCTV) – Florida A&M's Special Committee on Athletics has voted to exit the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and join the Southwestern Athletic Conference, effective the summer of 2021. The vote was unanimous. The motion now heads to the full Board of Trustees for a final vote on Thursday. "A lot to get done in a short amount of time to make sure it's done with high quality," Trustee Craig Reed said during the call. Committee members say a penalty of $250,000, which is the exit fee from the conference, will be taken form FAMU's expected 2020 distribution from the conference. "We've kind of been here before and I would like to make sure that we don't repeat the mistakes of the past with over promising," Trustee Nicole Wallace Said. When asked directly if he approved of the move, university president Dr. Larry Robinson simply said, "Yes." "Dr. Wallace has a copy of the MEAC by-laws related to this transition," Dr. Robinson continued. "I think it's important to cover ourselves on all bases." The vote will end a nearly 40-year conference affiliation in the MEAC; the Rattlers joined the conference in 1979 and left for one season in 1985. FAMU re-joined the conference full time in 1986, with the only other absence from the league coming in 2004, when attempting to jump to the FBS level in football. During the transition, FAMU remained a MEAC member in all other sports. FAMU becomes the first new member of the SWAC since 1999, when Alabama A&M joined. FAMU is the second program to leave the MEAC next summer, along with North Carolina A&T, who will join the Big South Conference next year. The SWAC is currently comprised of 10 programs: Alabama A&M, Alabama State University, Alcorn State Uinversity, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valey State University, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Grambling State University, Prairie View A&M, Southern University and Texas Southern University. In their proposal to switch conferences, FAMU says it will be financially beneficial to join the SWAC, highlighting extra potential revenue from success in football, specifically.

It is probably too late but the MEAC Commissioner should have been fired years ago for derilection of duty.
His body of work has caused major schools to vacate. The MEAC Conference is in trouble and I don't think it will survive.

That will be a fun new power clash struggle to watch unfold. Can't wait to see how it’s handled. We all know Famu "won't take the back seat" to anyone lol. Glad you brought that up lol. Will they humble themselves and assume their new role assigned or be rebels and step on toes to "Do what they wanna" against SU and Grambling?

I told someone here that I am predicting a FAMU-BCU battle over the date and location of the Florida Classic within the next 5 years. I can see one wanting to keep the game on the weekend before Thanksgiving and the other one wanting to move it back to Thanksgiving Weekend (as it used to be back until the late 1980s).
OR...I could see FAMU pushing the SWAC to look at getting back into the FCS Playoff picture and the SWAC telling them to forget about it.

Well with BCU being a Member of MEAC, The MEAC Season ends the weekend before THANKSGIVING! and we know GSU & SU rules the SWAC, that's the reason the SWAC no longer participates in NCAA PLAYOFFS for BAYOU CLASSIC!
