'We've got to start swimming to shore': Pollard provides update on timeline to bring back sports

Last month, after instituting a 10-percent pay cut nearly across the board and seeing the cessation of activities and on-campus classes, the Iowa State athletic department decided it needed to begin to chart a path forward despite all the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We had an all-staff meeting,” ISU athletic director Jamie Pollard said Tuesday, “and we talked about, we’re done treading water. We’ve got to start swimming to shore.”
The first step was to put together a tentative schedule with an eye toward the resumption of the football season — and other fall sports — starting as scheduled in September. That calendar is subject to change as the facts and circumstances about the pandemic change, but in order to truly begin moving forward, ISU felt it needed some guideposts to start working toward.
“This doesn’t mean these are the dates that are going to happen,” Pollard said, “but let’s all start acting like these are the dates that are going to happen...”
