You got that right...knowing our history is the light that guides our future. They have been shafted many times in the past, and they are not on a good road right now. The state of Florida would love to shut them down and shift them into Florida State. And they’ve had bad leadership since the mid-90s, which has compounded their problems.

Hard read.
I always wondered why what I understood to be a women's college and a college for negroes were allowed to stand in the same city in the south in the first place (us and uncg included). It's like they were looking for excuses to pretend a white girl got raped and come kill whole swaths of us at one time.
But I digress.
It's been fortuitous for FSU that folks in the state legislature have ended up as presidents of the university, hasn't it? I'm wondering if FAMU can follow whatever model used here in Maryland to successfully sue the state for decades of underfunding the state hbcus. Of course even if they could they'd still be too close to Florida State for comfort. A better bet may be to run to Lake City and take over Florida Gateway College for Billions in compensation and new buildings and infrastructure from the state of Florida to get them back all the lost past programs, retain the current programs, and continue any programs that Gateway offers. Then we can see how far the long arm of FSU extends.
The main problem is proximity to FSU.

FAMUs biggest problem is they are located in Florida! Don't let Disneyland fool you, this is a racist state. Remember these guys were the first state with a stand your ground law that made it legal to shoot unarmed Black folks.

Remember these guys were the first state with a stand your ground law that made it legal to shoot unarmed Black folks. Definitely not disputing that notion. I've lived here now for 20 years (7 +13), and there are large pockets of overt racism (North Florida and the Tampa area) and covert racism, much like Texas and every state east of the Mississippi River. And a lot like North Carolina.
But I would say that FAMU's biggest problem is that it's located in the capital city, which has 100,000 fewer people than Greensboro. MB69, I lived in Charlotte for 18 years. Can you imagine how things would be if A&T and UNCG were both located in a city like Columbia, SC?? All eyes would be on us. That's what they have here.

i remember many years ago there were "rumors" of an eventual a&t/uncg merger. did that rumor have any credence? obviously the merger is not gonna happen, at least not in the foreseeable future. but did the rumor itself have legs to stand on? were there any legislative attempts or discussions to do so? or was it simply a rumor only and nothing else...

The merger with UNCG may have been a rumor just like there was a rumor we were leaving the MEAC for the "BS".
Anything is possible. They don't like our pretty campus, facilities. curriculum, sports program and more. Those people get jealous when they see people of color progressing and achieving just as they are or more.
We can't go to sleep. We got to be on guard at all times for a possible merger or takeover.

Then we can see how far the long arm of FSU extends. The main problem is proximity to FSU. Well in light of this COV19 pandemic we are in for a new normal or new reality. But Baldwin was right "the more things change, the more they remain the same". I have always maintained that we are in a struggle for our survival. We are going to see States Rights Authoritarianism become a reality when we hear the Governor of California refer to his state as a nation state. It will probably be a matter of time before A&T is a footnote to history as the efforts have already begun with our running away from home MEAC. What is the Shool of Nano referred to as? Let's hope that the pandemonium of this pandemic not develop into the 1950s' pattern and practices with social distancing/segregation. Methinks that there will be moves to re-segregate society along pseudo-scientific lines due to the implosion of the economy. In a sense we are all under house arrest. It wont be long before drones will be flying over neighborhoods for citizens containment. I guess I digress.

If I recall Dr. Humphrey was a decent leader and FAMU on a trajectory that would have propelled them beyond FSU. If I am correct the events of the theft of the Presidential election 2000 Bush v. Gore with the theft of the presidency resulted in the end of Dr. Humphrey's tenure and the involvement of the FAMU student body participation in the political process. Then too with the money factor under the table of recruitment of athletes to FAMU versus FSU as well as other similar situated HBCUs contributes to the demise including niggardly funding from the state legislatures.

Then too with the money factor under the table of recruitment of athletes to FAMU versus FSU as well as other similar situated HBCUs contributes to the demise including niggardly funding from the state legislatures. Well, Dr. Fred Humphries was definitely the best president that FAMU has had since at least the Civil Rights Era. He had vision and clout. Just like our own Dr. Harold Martin honed his skills at WSSU, Humphries was able to sharpen his skills at Tennessee State before going to Tallahassee. In Nashville, he had to fight off a sure-thing merger with UT-Nashville. In fact, he was able to turn the tide back on them...Tennessee State ended up absorbing UT-Nashville instead of the other-way-around.
Humphries' downfall was that he had too much influence with key Black leaders around the state for the White Establishment's taste, IMHO. The last straw was when FAMU was named Time Magazine's College of the Year. They had to find a way to get him outta there.
