Chucks cost $8.50 in my hometown and the only place you could purchase them were at the Army & Navy store. Chucks were durable. You could play in them year round and they still never wore out. Some people could not afford the $8.50 for Chucks. They went to Sears and Robuck and bought the imitation Chucks called "Jeepers". I think they sold for about 5 or 6 bucks. You only got "big time" amongst your friends when you were able to purchase Chucks and graduated from the imitation "jeepers. You were really bad if you purchased the first colorful Chucks - low cut blacks. Not too many people had them. Times sho have changed. Damn!! When I was growing up, at the start of summer Rose's 5 and dime would roll out a 30 gallon barrels of $1 dollar black high top sneakers. My mom would buy me a pair and after wearing them a couple of weeks, the soles would come loose and flap. You'd throw them in the trash and go barefooted the rest of the summer.

Aggie great Elmer Austin, the winner of the very first MEAC Player of the Year Award in 1972. I remember being at the games not understanding why the Coach didn't have him on the bench til after the game and he ends up with a double double. He made it look so easy and effortless. Bobby Park was a good player and a cool guy but June Harris was the Man. I have a great Bird story that I will take to my grave. You have to be there in the 70s

You have to be there in the 70s As a young kid, Daryl Cherry and Nathan "Pedro" Pettis were always my favorite Aggie players. If Cherry saw me, he would always be kid around with me. But I've always thought that June Harris was their best player during that era.

I love this shot! I think that it's the oldest Aggies basketball team photo that I've seen.
I'm trying to get info on Coach Breaux, coach Joseph Echols and Aggies baseball coach Felix Harris. Echols coached both basketball and baseball at A&T, before moving on to Norfolk State.

Sinclair Colbert - CEO at LGSC Property Solutions, Inc - Real Estate in GAColbert very tall and very smart. With hard work, he molded himself into an excellent big man. Walker was a very good big man. I believe he led the conference in rebounding.

Vernon Walker passed several years ago in High Point, NC.
He was hell on the boards and led the nation in rebounds one year.
A&T had great players throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's. Winning 20 games or more each year was a given.
No problem.

Pedro, Harris and Cherry are all deceased now. Cherry was A&Ts Bo Jackson. He came to here and stared in basketball and football.

Aggie great Elmer Austin, the winner of the very first MEAC Player of the Year Award in 1972. Elmer Austin led the Aggies in scoring and rebounding over the final two years of his career. He is the only Aggie to be named both All-CIAA and All-MEAC. I only saw him play once, down at the "old cracker box" at Little Liz. It was 30 degrees outside, and at least 95 inside. Ronald Jackson reminds of me a lot of Elmer Austin. He didn't have the range Ron has, but nobody out worked him in the post.
