On the free throws issues cats need to borrow a page out of Kobe Bryant book go in the gym shoot 500 free throws. It is about desire it comes from within players have got to want to be the best. The saying you can lead a horse to water you can't make him drink you can send a boy to school you can't make him think.

Shooting 500 free throws a day is the worst thing they can do right now ... if they are using the wrong mechanics.
All that will do is reinforce the current bad habits they already have and make it even harder to actually build proper muscle memory.
The first thing they need to do is understand what their proper shooting form should be (unfortunately nobody on the staff seems to be able to explain that to them) and WHY the ball is going WHERE it is.
If they dont know the WHY they were never control the WHERE.

Shooting free throws is not witchcraft. It is science.

Yes, in my opinion, everybody on the team has a less than ideal free throw shooting form. Even Ron Jackson.
Everybody on the team needs to totally revamp their mechanics and, more importantly, understand how those mechanics work so that they can self-correct on the spot.

I'm no FT shooting expert. Everybody is different. If there are some major mechanical problems, then I don't think they can be fixed in March. At this time of the year, the best thing to do is look at what each player's mechanics are and figure out how to tweak them to give each player a better chance of making more FTs.
I'm looking at the Howard stats.....we were 17 of 37 at the FT line. Tweaking things here and there - we could go to 27 out of 37. I'm not looking for us to shoot the ball like Mark Price. However, if we can make just a handful of FTs more per game, we're virtually unbeatable in conference.
We'll be at the Scope next week - it's dark and cavernous. We have seen every team in conference. We know what they'll try to do against us. I'm sure the coach knows what we need to do against our opponents to be successful.
Seriously - the only thing that worries me is FTs. This team needs to be out on the Scope floor getting a number of FTs in to get very familiar with the backdrop. We know how to play defense; we know our offensive sets. Ain't really that much more practicing this team needs to do.... ....FT shooting needs to be near the top (if not at the top) of the list of major objectives which need to be addressed in Norfolk next week.
FT shooting is really the only thing I see which puts our title chances in jeopardy......that's just me talking.

Here is where in the process of free throw practice it will work the mechanics out it is called continuous improvement. Practice practice practice.

If you keep doing the wrong thing you will continue to get the wrong results.

our overall shooting mechanics are not flawed to the point that "everybody" on the team needs to adjust their mechanics. i think that's an "over simplified" approach. as i always say, coaching basketball is not "rocket science".
midseason changes to your shooting mechanics is the last thing you'd wanna do this time of the season. changing your shooting mechanics (if necessary) is for the "offseason" because whatever your shooting mechanics currently are, it must come natural to you whereby you do not have to think about it.
that's why "repitition" is so very important. its called "muscle memory". muscle memory is when your physical body remembers what it experiences due to numerous repetitions, so you don't have to think about it. when you practice free throws and/or shooting in general over and over again numerous times, shooting will become "locked into" your muscle memory so that when you go to shoot, you'll have to make little to no adjustments and most importantly, you will not have to "think about it".
if guys had to change their free throw mechanics this time of the season, it would not come natural to them and every time they shoot a free throw in a game, they'd have to "think about it" which is the last thing you'd wanna do at the free throw line.
free throw shooting should be completely "routine". meaning, you go thru the exact same shooting motions every time you shoot a free throw. also, shooting numerous repetitions (say 500 per day) builds "confidence" because you'll see that shot go in numerous times thereby knowing thru experience that you can make that shot.
a lot of free throw shooting is "mental" and the mental part is not to be trivialized. if fans, coaches, tv/radio broadcasters, and other media outlets keep telling you over and over again that your team can't shoot free throws, sooner or later it will "get into your head" and have you thinking about it on the free throw line. i betcha anything that a lot of kam's free throw shooting woes are in his head. but ya shouldn't have to think about that stuff in a real game, you should be totally "relaxed" with a clear mind...
