During Black History Month, would like BDV members/others to recommend books/videos to enhance appreciation of our history/culture.
My 1st recommendation: The Mis-Education of the Negro - Carter G Woodson (I'm into the classics)

uncpress.org/book/9780807845813/their-highest-potential/One of my favorite books of all time from one of my favorite scholars. I first read it as a grad student and it was a game changer for me. It follows a segregated school in Caswell County, NC and shows the power of education and transformative pedagogy.

Mis-Education is an interesting listen/read. Still applicable to today's issues. Like Dr Woodson's frankness.

Early African-American films - Made in 1929, Hallelujah is an artifact of no small historical significance: the first major studio movie with an all-black cast and a white director (the esteemed King Vidor), it was also one of the earliest "talkies" after the silent film era. The Green Pastures is a 1936 American film depicting stories from the Bible as visualized by black characters.

I was gonna suggest Invisible Man. Black on Red: My 44 Years Inside the Soviet Union by Robert Robinson is a gem if you can find it.

If you haven't seen Dorothy Dandridge on film, I recommend you seeing "Porky and Bess" and "Carmen Jones."
If you want to see a compelling documentary, please watch, "The Rape of Recy Taylor." It's been playing on STARZ recently.
If you are into sports history, if you haven't seen it, please check out, "Black Magic."

Just watched the Baldwin - Buckley debate at Cambridge Univ in 1965. Baldwin's "for" position is eloquent. Position: Is the American Dream at the expense of the American Negro? Mr. Baldwin begins speaking at the 14 minute mark. youtu.be/oFeoS41xe7w
