I found this interesting article about what Texas State (1-AA school) is planning for their Spring Game. I don't know about the idea of "guest coaches", but we sure need to rethink our marketing strategy of how we present this event to the fans and alumni. Hell, do we even have a marketing strategy in place for the Spring Game?

SAN MARCOS - With business leaders from San Marcos on one side of the Bobcat football program's war room conference table and Texas State campus leaders on the other, plenty of strategy came into play as the teams for Saturday's Maroon and Gold Classic were selected.
Texas State second-year coach David Bailiff dubbed the two groups of guest coaches who will take the reigns of the first half of Saturday's spring game as "town vs. gown." Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
Coaching the Gold team will be long-time Bobcat Athletic Foundation member Albert Gonzalez, State Representative Patrick Rose, Texas State letterman and Toyota of San Marcos owner Jim Stienke and Sac-N-Pac's Blake Warren. The Maroon squad will be coached by Dr. John Huffman, the husband of Texas State University president Dr. Denise M. Trauth and Texas State Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Perry Moore along with Associated Student Government President Jerry Parker and Vice President Chris Moore.
"I had heard of schools doing this in the past but these kinds of things are usually sold at an auction as a fundraiser," Bailiff said. "We just wanted to invite some people who have really helped this program to live the life of a coach for a half and experience what we do."
The guest coaches will be responsible for calling the plays during the first half of Saturday's game. The first half will consist of 15-minute quarters with a running clock. The clock will stop on incompletions and out of bounds plays the final two minutes of the half. Texas State's coaching staff will coach the second half with 12-minute quarters being played.
Wednesday's draft started with a coin toss and the Gold coaching staff selecting Barrick Nealy, who has started the past two seasons, as their quarterback. With its first offensive pick, the Maroon staff took senior offensive lineman Thomas Keresztury.
"It was a lot of fun to watch the two coaching staffs' strategy," Bailiff said. "As a staff, we were giving them insight into the players. You could see there was a lot of thought put into this by the coaches. I think there's some added pressure when you're picking the players.
"It looks like the two teams will match up well," he said.
Defensively, Texas State's returning defensive line duo of Fred Evans and Travis Upshaw will see limited in their playing time on Sunday and the two coaching staffs selected them with their first defensive picks.
Evans was named the Southland Conference's Newcomer of the Year last season while Upshaw has also had a strong spring after starting all 11 games at nose guard last season. Evans will play for the Maroon squad while Upshaw will be on the Gold team.
After the draft, the two guest coaching staffs worked independently with Texas State's staff to each draw up a pair of trick plays which could be used Saturday. The Bobcats will hold their final spring practice on Thursday with the Maroon and Gold teams each preparing for Saturday's game.
Texas State students attending the Maroon and Gold Classic or heading to the Bobcats' baseball game against Northwestern State can enjoy free hot dogs and soft drinks courtesy of CARCO Collision and Custom Center as long as they last beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the stadium. Also at 1:30, the football team will play host to the Time Warner Junior Bobcat Club Clinic. The clinic will last until 2:30 p.m.
Also the football squad, along with the Texas State Strutters, is currently soliciting items for donation to be resold at the "Great Garage Sale." The fundraiser for the two groups will be held on the Bobcat Stadium west concourse Sunday, April 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
