I very seldom watch the halftime show. When I got back to my seat the 101 was still performing and was still on the field while we taking the field for the second half kick-off. At the end of the game as I was walking out I was surprised to hear the delay of game penalty at the start of the second half was on us. Was the BGMM's show to long?

On the tv they said the penalty was on SC Steat and we declined it. Who knows?

The white cap came and talked to Washington, prior to 2nd hall KO. I assume we declined the penalty, which game management wise also baffles the mind.
The BGMM, played an 8.5 minute halftime show well within the respectable limit.
I would have taken the yards against them.

TV commentator said declining the penalty was just part of understanding black college culture. I can get it.

I think it was a great thing to decline that penalty, but I have to wonder if they would have done the same

This is the first time that I’ve seen this happen... classy, and started by Coach Washington, but I’m gonna be watching this to see if others catch on.

In all honesty, HBCU head football coaches have been declining that halftime penalty for years. In my time, it goes all the way back to Willie Jeffries, Bill Hayes, Steve Wilson, Bill Davis, Bill Thomas, Ken Riley and others.
The only ones that I really remember adamantly accepting the penalty are Rudy Hubbard, Jim McKinley and Alvin Wyatt...and I'm sure that there are others.
But because of TV, they are trying to tighten up on the time utilized by the marching bands nowadays.

I expected halftime would run over when SC State brought out 20 people on the field and started introducing them one by one. If not for that, there would have been plenty of time for both bands to do their halftime shows.

Right, the delay came from the halftime introductions. Our band took the field just under 15 minutes. But, they gave us the penalty that Buddy declined which was a class act. But the flag was a waste of time.

I guess there is a concern that someone will take advantage of this kind gesture and deliberately take extra time.

Way back when, it was done by NCC (big time) at War Memorial Stadium to the chagrin of the fans. Left A&T with little time to perform. Other bands have done this stunt before. Saw it at Howard once, but flag was waived after a discussion. After all it was Homecoming. We must remember, the band's performance is the most important event of the day. Officials should know that by now.
