This series is probably the greatest promotional material ever produced by A&T.

A Day in the Life of the BGMM: Emmanuel Perez-Arias - Trombone Section Leader I find these stories so fascinating. These kids have interesting lives and they love being a part of the A&T culture. I'm so proud of every one of them! PS...when I was at A&T in the 1960s, I lived in those same apartments...and paid a whopping $50 per month rent!

Manny mentioned it in his piece. He is a Sophomore section leader. That means most of the trombone section are freshmen. He's putting a priority on building a "family", so that folks want to continue to march. There's probably a ton of upperclassmen walking around on the yard who only marched one or two years.

Manny mentioned it in his piece. He is a Sophomore section leader. That means most of the trombone section are freshmen. He's putting a priority on building a "family", so that folks want to continue to march. There's probably a ton of upperclassmen walking around on the yard who only marched one or two years. Having upperclassmen drop out of the band isn't unusual. My freshman and sophomore year marching in the A&T band, my grades suffer but I was enjoying the hell out of hanging out with my band family every day. By my Junior year I was in full panic mode trying to figure out how I was going to pull my GPA up to graduate on time. And that was back when just showing up for class got you at least a "D". Today, it's tough getting into A&T and hard as hell to graduate so a lot of upperclassmen band students pick matriculation over marching. And since the band doesn't provide enough scholarships, a lot of upperclassmen must get jobs to fund their educations. By the way, it's really hard performing in our band. 3 to 4 hours every night practicing and almost all day on Saturday at a game. Think about it...20 plus hard working hours every week for no scholarship money! And we wonder why upperclassmen choose to not march. I'm not saying more scholarships will "guarantee" that more upperclassmen will stick around and march but it could really help. Or we could just reduce the time and effort the students put in preparing for halftime shows and be like NCCU, Del State and Morgan bands.
