A&T notebook: Experienced Aggies make final preparations for Celebration Bowl trip By Jeff Mills jeff.mills@greensboro.com 2 hrs agoGREENSBORO — The last practice in the city limits is in the books, a Tuesday morning session on the artificial turf inside Proehlific Park. And now N.C. A&T is headed for Atlanta, on the road Wednesday for Celebration Bowl week festivities and a date with Alcorn State. No. 11 A&T (9-2) will play Alcorn State (9-3) in the bowl game at noon Saturday at the Atlanta Falcons' home, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It's a matchup of the MEAC and SWAC champions, a black college football championship game. A&T has already won two of the first three Celebration Bowls, and the experience counts, Aggies coach Sam Washington said. "Experience is huge," Washington said. "It's more so for the little stuff. The guys know the things not to do. They understand what the expectations are. They know how we travel and the conduct in which we travel. Those are the things experience really helps with. They understand the situation." Nine of this year's Aggies played in the first Celebration Bowl against Alcorn State. Four of those seniors – left tackle Marcus Pettiford, left guard Micah Shaw, linebacker Deion Jones and wide receiver and kick returner Malik Wilson – started that 2015 game. "I'm very proud of this group of guys," Washington said. "... They persevered. They continued to play and they believed in each other. And look where we are now. Inside the numbers: A&T's matchup vs. Alcorn State in Celebration Bowl By Jeff Mills, Greensboro News-Record Sports jeff.mills@greensboro.com December 12, 2018
GREENSBORO — The Aggies and Braves traveled to Atlanta today, settling in ahead of the Celebration Bowl on Saturday.
No. 11 N.C. A&T (9-2) will play Alcorn State (8-3) at noon Saturday in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The fourth annual game kicks off college football’s bowl season, a matchup between the MEAC and SWAC champions that serves as the black college national championship.
“We’re playing a very worthy opponent,” A&T coach Sam Washington said. “Alcorn is a solid football team. They do the little things well. They run the football, and teams that have success running the football generally control the clock. It’s going to be very interesting to see how it unfolds. They run the ball and we like stopping the run. So let’s put the ball down and play.”
A look at the NCAA statistics for the nation’s 124 FCS programs shows two similar teams:...

I swell with GREAT pride and get a little emotional every time I see them go to the statue to touch the feet of the Greensboro Four. This is a relatively new tradition that I hope they NEVER break. It's awesome and should remind all of us the difference between HBCU football and the rest.

I encourage all true Aggies to make arrangements to see this tradition "live" at the "February One" statue. It's so respectful and moving. It's really strange to see players that are usually so hyper and loud be so quiet and respectful. Somebody on the coaching staff got the true message of the A&T Four over to them.
By the way Freeze, us oldschool Aggies call those four proud students by their true name...The A&T Four. This event only became the Greensboro Four when the city figured out there was some tourist dollars in it for the city.
P.S. I think Broadway brought this tradition to A&T. I don't ever remember any other coach doing this. What I think is so amazing is how quiet they've kept this tradition. Only a few folks like us actually know it's happening.

Good idea 69. The dept should announce dates/time when the "team pays respect".
I always visit during homecoming. It's a great tradition.

Thanks for that history lesson. I never realized that Greensboro tried to co-opt the sit-ins in that way by rebranding it the Greensboro Four instead of the A&T Four. I'll be sure to recognize it correctly from here on. And yes I believe you are correct in stating that Broadway started the tradition. I consider it one of the most moving and important pregame traditions in college sports now.

MB69– Do you know whether or not “A&T Four” has been trademarked?? Hopefully either the men and their families (or secondarily the Universiy) has, or can gain, legal control over both names. DOOMS might have a better slant on this, but if they gained legal rights to the name, “Greensboro Four,” they can keep it from being used.

I think the media is disrespecting A&T. Multiple outlets, including Football Gameplan and HBCU Gameday are picking Alcorn over A&T.

And to be upfront with you, I get extremely upset when this event is called the "Greensboro Four"...like Greensboro did something heroic in 1960! Hell Greensboro and it's racist citizens were why these four brave Aggies had to protest. So why ignore the real heros and recognize the villains? Our history is always being hijacked by somebody and told from their perspective and not ours. Sorry I had to go on that rant but I love my university and I deeply value and respect all of the sacrifices and struggles we've had to endure just to survive these 127 years!
