The Syllabus: So where is the N.C. A&T band?
John Newsom john.newsom@greensboro.com Long before the N.C. A&T football team went on its recent tear — the Aggies haven’t lost since 2016 and are now ranked fifth in the nation in one of the latest FCS polls — the Blue and Gold Marching Machine was always a good reason to catch a game. The A&T band has been good for a long, long time. It doesn't disappoint. But the band didn’t perform at the A&T’s season-opening football game against Jacksonville (Ala.) State, and folks noticed — enough folks, apparently, that a couple of A&T vice chancellors felt the need to send out an all-campus memo last week about the band’s whereabouts. In the one-page letter, vice chancellors Melody Pierce (student affairs) and Ken Sigmon (advancement) noted that the band would miss not just the Jacksonville State game on Aug. 25 but also the East Carolina game the following weekend. The reasons? Money and performance time. The 500-mile trip to Montgomery, Ala., was going to cost too much and, according to the letter, “performance opportunities during the game were very limited.” Read more: www.greensboro.com/blogs/the_syllabus/the-syllabus-so-where-is-the-n-c-a-t/article_2840943d-3b86-593b-bc63-d5d2e5866f95.html

I don't think that our band not showing up for a game is newsworthy. We can't be the only band that didn't travel to an out of town game. The newspaper never wrote about the band attending away games in past seasons so why the big interest now? They must have thought it would somehow reflect on us negatively.

It became newsworthy when those two administrators released that silly letter last week.
I told yall then it was a bad idea and would only put the band's absence under more scrutiny.

Also, pretty much anytime T is on TV, there are always cut aways to the band.
And believe it or not some do pay attention to social media and there was kmstuff out there asking about the bands whereabouts.
The letter, however, was the correspondence that made it "newsworthy".

I have to agree with 1969 I've never known the news and recorded to be overwhelmingly pro A&T, ever, so there's that. And, I think the only people that are still butt hurt over the band not going to those games, are the same people that got exactly what they ask for, and that was a response from the administration. Which coincidentally mirrored exactly what was said on this site. The band not traveling isn't news, all we learned is that the band is underfunded... but we knew that already... Right!

I take it as a very positive sign. Wasn’t too long ago that nobody bothered to talk about whether or not the band was at a game. If UNC’s band wasn’t at an away game do you think they’d be missed?

NC A&T marching band plans to bring their A-game in 2018 after chart-topping season Posted 9:02 am, September 7, 2018, by Tracy Clemons, Fox 8
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The North Carolina A&T football team plays its first home game of the season Saturday afternoon. The home opener also means the debut of the 2018 edition of the Blue and Gold Marching Machine. The 200-plus member band has been preparing since before the semester began, getting all the music, drills and dance routines prepared. “We get to know people on various levels. Sometimes at the lowest, sometimes at the highest. That`s what makes us a family,” says senior drum major James Washburn III. The Machine is a major asset when they are in attendance. That is why some of us were frustrated by the way they prioritized their travel schedule the way they did this year.
But I will be the first person to acknowledge that the Machine adds tremendous value to the gameday experience. Those kids are extremely talented and hard-working.
