This is an ESPN sponsored event! They aren't interested in the bands, they're interested in the game between two top rated teams.

ESPN gives bands very little airtime. They are in the business of getting bills paid at halftime and giving their on-air talent some run. We didn't take our band to Kent St... played 4 OTs in the rain and didn't bother us a bit. We'll be aight.

I trust that Chancellor Martin and his administration are being good stewards of the resources at their disposal. If one of our well to do alumni really want the Band at the JSU game then just contact the university and offer to pay the expense. If JSU really wants the band then pony up an added percentage of the gate. There may be reasons other than money for not sending the band. I know first hand how tight Martin is with A&T’s resources. He is a good steward without emotion! If there's an A&T Alumni member that wants to fund this trip, make the cashiers check for $70,000 out to the Blue and Gold Marching Machine and send it to Dr. Ruff! I'm sure he will order the buses immediately.

Don't they already have atleast 3 brand owned charter buses? More than likely, those will travel ahead of the team and be used in Montgomery

I’m not sure what ESPN was to do with this. This is more about supporting the team and representing the University. Is the city of Dover interested in BGMM, does the Daytona Motor Speedway subside our trips? Why should we expect ESPN to foot the bill for us to support OUR team. If WE choose not to support OUR team at every possible level for this nationally broadcast event then that is on US.

If I'm not mistaken, ESPN paid for our band's travel and lodging for the Celebration Bowl. For the opener, they aren't even reimbursing either band for their travel to Montgomery, AL. That's about a 7-8 hour bus ride from Greensboro to Montgomery. I understand what you're saying, but even if you flip the Dover trip to Montgomery, the band would still need to take money from other trips because it's just so long. I think the blame should be cast around to multiple players, because we knew about this game since April. Band boosters could've talked to Dr. Ruff, Dr. Martin and Mr. Hilton and earmarked booster funds for this trip back in the spring. However, that didn't happen. But I'm not worried about the machine showing up, because our football should have the clout to carry A&T's brand next Saturday just like the band.

If I make a decision to pay my home mortgage payment rather than buying an expensive cell phone, should I be "blamed" for that decision? As I've said over and over on this site...A&T has limited funds and every department must make decisions about how they will spend those funds. Dr. Ruff and the band staff made a decision that the band would not use their limited travel budget to travel to this game. We didn't go to Kent State or Tulsa for the same reason. And if the Band boosters, Hilton, or the AAF get together to raise money for the band that money needs to be for band student scholarships. The majority of our band students are not on scholarship! They receive no funds for the hours of practice in the rain, heat and cold. By the way these are engineering, math, english, business and technology majors. So I believe fundraising for student scholarships should come before fundraising for travel to one football game.

We didn't go to Kent State or Tulsa for the same reason. But Kent State and Tulsa were not FCS Kickoff games showcased on ESPN for the entire nation to see. Surely you can see the difference in the stature and promotional potential of the previous games that you have mentioned and our game with Jax State on ESPN next Saturday.....right?

And again....if the university has their reasons.....fine. But I think fans who care (and there seem to be a lot of them) deserve to know upfront why these decisions were made. I don't think that is asking too much of our university.

Understood about the limited budget but, I have to ask: Did the question ever get raised about the trip. I mean, something along the lines of, "Dr. Martin we have a limited travel budget and we have a game in Montgomery, Alabama that we just cannot afford. However, we (BBGM) would like to attend considering it will be televised on ESPN and we would like to help promote A&T's brand nationwide...?" In my opinion, that would have gotten the band to the game because, you get way more bees with honey than you do with vinegar. But the band is viewing it as THEIR time to shine would be reduced.
