On top of that this a MAJOR game as it pertains to the relevance of HBCU football.
We have seen no official word from the school or anything. No gofundme or anything of the sorts. Do you guys think Grambling or Southern would have not brought their bands if they were highly ranked and playing another ranked team on ESPN? If the BGMM goes to Houston next year for the battle of the bands I’m going to be pissed.

oh, and for the record, i am in favor of the bgmm going to alabama because "in effect" its gonna be a home field advantage for jacksonville state. so i'm sure the team would appreciate the bgmm being there to support them.
i don't know why they aren't going, i suspect because of costs. but i feel that they should be there more so to support the team than to be on tv.
however, regarding whether its a big game? shoot, to me, heck yeah its a big game! we're coming off of an "undefeated" season and jacksonville state is one of the top fcs teams in the country. so hail yeah its a big game! i'm convinced that pretty much everybody (teams, coaches, and "knowledgeable" fans) in the meac will be watching, and probably most in the swac too.
not only does a&t have a lot at stake in this game, but so does the "hbcu football brand". coming off of an "undefeated" season, if we royally "stink up the joint", that would tarnish a&t's brand as well as tarnish the hbcu football brand in general because we currently represent "the best" of hbcu football. if we "stink it up", it'll be a poor reflection on our program and hbcu football.
however, if we play well in this game, it'll go a long way towards removing the "poor perception" of hbcu football across the country. it would also improve a&t's brand and definitely help recruiting.
so yes, to me this is a "big game" because there's a lot at stake...

Two thoughts: I think that the fanbase is expecting the level of show that the BGMM puts on against PWI schools on the road, however with the amount of time we have before the game, I rather the band NOT go if they have to slap together a last minute show not on the level of previous shows at App St. Gardner Webb/ Charlotte, & UNC. Also, and this is pure speculation but, its quite possible that the trip to Savannah will be coupled with a recruitment performance elsewhere Its par for the course for alot of our bands and happens when the BGMM goes to GA and also the DMV. In short, just because WE as fans dont deem a certain trip to ABC state isn't worth it, there could be an additional reason for why the band is choosing to go. Im disappointed that the BGMM is not going to Jax State however these are the tough decisions that the administration and leadership have to make when dealing with real money.

Soooo....does anyone have a real and rational explanation from a legitimate source as to why a GoFundMe is not an option here for the Montgomery trip?? It seems like people are speculating that this is a lack of funding/resources issue yet it also seems like the general consensus is that alumni would gladly jump in and raise the money to foot the bill so that they can see their band on a nationally televised game.
Do y'all think the university is worried about appearing as though they are cheap if a GoFundMe is started/requested? if they don't want to go public with it, they could easily just send a direct email to alumni asking for emergency financial support to fund the travel and hotel stay for the band. I'm sure folks would respond. Like most people, I think missing out on an opportunity to expose the band to a nationally televised audience is a horrible mistake.

I believe there is too much red tape for a GoFundMe for a public institution

Didn’t FAMU alumni fund the 100 trip to Howard one time?

I trust that Chancellor Martin and his administration are being good stewards of the resources at their disposal. If one of our well to do alumni really want the Band at the JSU game then just contact the university and offer to pay the expense. If JSU really wants the band then pony up an added percentage of the gate. There may be reasons other than money for not sending the band. I know first hand how tight Martin is with A&T’s resources. He is a good steward without emotion!

I believe there is too much red tape for a GoFundMe for a public institution Ok. Then how about an email directly to alumni requesting donations specifically to fund the trip? This is the part where I really wish that someone with direct knowledge of the situation would clarify what's going on with this decision. As some have stated, I'm not a "band geek" at all, but no one can deny the unique pageantry, culture, and flair that Black college bands bring to HBCU football. For better or worse, people associate Black college football with bands. For a nationally televised game, where there will be a limited few games on to compete for attention, our band needs to be there. That's brand marketing 101 and a no-brainer. If it is a question of funding, ask alumni to pony up the dough....we could get this done in less than a week. The problem is the game is in a week and a half. I think most alumni will consider this a blown opportunity if the band is not going because of "lack of funds." A blown opportunity that didn't have to be.

Ask yourself this: How much would it cost for our sports marketing department to buy a 3-hour block of advertising space in prime time on ESPN? That is equivalent of what we are getting by participating in this game.

They don't understand the weekend before football REALLY kicks off, people are salivating at watching a real game and we are in it, and they want to leave the band home. All eyes will be on the 2 schools in the game. How the preacher say it, "Yall ain't got it yet!"

At this point, I dont really blame Dr. Ruff and the Machine anymore.
Like I said before, band geeks are just gonna do band geeks things. In their world that are insulated from the concepts of logic and strategic planning.
When you spend 15-hour work days practicing music in the hot sun it tends to warp your sense of reality.
However, my disappointment is now geared primarily toward Chancellor Martin. He should know better and do something.
I have not been this upset with his lack of leadership since the whole Gucci Mane concert debacle.
