Yes, it "is a pride thing." When you make an effort to respect our students and our University, we will make every effort to show up and entertain your audience. But some PWIs haven't been that inviting...when Coastal Carolina announced when our band showed up on campus at Myrtle Beach for a game that they had cut our allotted time for our halftime show and they issued our band director a walkie talkie to tell him when the band could play in the stands. Or when App State informed us that our halftime show would be moved to after the game and after the darn fireworks show. Or UNC-C informing us that we could perform but each band student had to buy an admission ticket at student rates. Yes it is a pride thing and if they respect us like UNC Chapel Hill we will give them a memorable performance. By the way, every A&T Band Director has had to make tough choices about where they will perform based on the budget and what's best for the program and the University. So this is not new. The university is doing all it can to provide adequate funds for travel expenses, scholarships, instruments and band staff. But it may never be able to fund every away band trip. You think they want us there pumping up our crowd? You think they want us there giving their fans a reason to wish their band was better? You think they want us there hyping up our football team that already stands a good chance to beat them? You think they want us there stealing all their recruits that are willing to entertain the idea of attending an HBCU? You think they want of us there giving all the ones that won't something to think about? So they disrespect us, and out of pride we respond by giving them everything they could ask of us? Um... I agree makes no sense on the band leaderships part, they looking at the small picture instead of big picture.

I actually made plans to go to both games, the BGMM was the major reason.... guess I can just give the money I planed to spend on those trips to the BGMM scholarship fund. How's the Seafood in Savannah?

I love the passion you guys now have for the A&T band. I can remember the time when most Aggie sports fans could care less about the band. It's good to see that's changing.
Under the support of Dr. Martin's administration and the leadership of Dr. Ruff the "Little band with the big sound" has become the most entertaining and innovative college marching bands in the nation.
I'm glad to see your passion and hope that passion will drive you all to make a donation to the Blue and Gold Marching Machine.

FROM MEACFANSZONE: MCP0103 If I was the band director, I would still come. I would get there before ECU pre game and march up college hill with the other high school bands. You would be allowed since its band day and the other bands will be marching to the stadium as well. That would be great exposure and recruiting for A&T to those high school band students. Also fans can see the band marching in as you pass through the tailgating spots. Even though you can't perform your halftime show you will be able to play in the stands. I'm not sure of the stand rules but I do know when NCCU came they played a lot and they played loud. Thanks for posting my comment. I really hope your band director changes his mind. I know it sucks not playing halftime but your presence in the stands will be just as powerful. I don't know what ECU is trying to pull, but scheduling Band Day during the first game of the season doesn't make sense and a lot of folks in Greenville are upset over this. I marched at ECU and graduated in 99. I have had season tickets every year since I graduated and we never had Band Day this early. Also Band Day is always scheduled during games against teams that we know will not bring fans. ECU knows that A&T will bring a lot of fan support and a lot of folks are coming just to see your band. I'm not sure who schedules the different events during home games but whoever did this really dropped the ball. If it all possible try and convince your band director to come. A lot of folks would greatly appreciate it and would really enjoy hearing you guys. Like I stated in my post above, march up College Hill with the rest of the high school bands and let the ECU fans see how great you are.

As far as ECU goes, I would pull the old "Black, Loud and Late" approach. We did it a few times at away games during my time with The Machine and it worked to perfection each time to fire up the Aggie faithful. We would intentionally not enter the stadium until just before halftime. Once at SCSU, we were "BL&L" and we were big enough to pull the Band A, Band B trick. We split the band equally into two separate bands. Band A struck up, entered the stadium, got in formation and kicked down behind the end zone. The crowd roared because they didn't think we were making the trip to Orangeburg. Just as the crowd settled down, Band B struck up behind the fence. The crowd began to ooh, aah and get louder as we marched in hitting 90s with stank faces and joined Band A. The SCSU band just stood there dumb struck on the sideline. We did a 2001 Space Odyssey fanfare, Commodores show with a "Easy" concert tune and a "Brick House" dance routine. Aggies that went to that game (those of us that are still around) still talk about that entrance.

I've been asking about the band's travel schedule since March and the answer has been the same...no Jacksonville State and no ECU. Now if the Administration says they have got to go to either game, I'm sure they will start loading the busses.

They should be at one of those games. Who do we need to lobby?

They should be at one of those games. Who do we need to lobby? I think Hilton would be the first stop. Just to see if he's interested in lobbying for the band to attend either game and if he's willing to help find the funds. I think if Hilton finds the additional travel funds for the band this may happen.

Someone explain to me how "we" understand the value of the band but unwilling to invest in it?

I think we should definitely be at the first game since it's televised on ESPN. Now, just my opinion, our band should make any game that's in the state of NC...Period. But, if ECU isn't extending an invite what can you do...?
