If we could develop a durable type like burmuda, but doesn’t go dormant in the winter, it would gross a billion dollars. Kansas City Chiefs play on grass year round, they maintain the green that you see on TV by planting winter rye grass before they know that the brown is coming. I delivered a load of turf to them before preseason, their turf provider is in Monroe NC. The turf provider also maintains the turf, (“The Chiefs grass is as brown and ugly as any other before that treatment”) they use to do it for Duke every season and some other locals before they switched to artificial turf. He also informed me that they donate a lot of new turf because some customers only need it for TV purposes or they have a budget that allows them to change turf every season etc then they throw it away or donate it, ie in New England, When US soccer has a tournament in the Patriots stadium they put down grass over the artificial turf, roll it up and throw it away or donate it locally after the tournament. The maintenance of putting the turf down is the receivers only expense. He blew my mind with the cost of the turf, a few hundred thousand, with install.

That sounds like a partnership we need to explore Dooms it blows my mind that we don’t have a turf farm, the baseball stadium need turf, softball, football. May they need turf in front of the Admin building or some other!

saw this over at onnidan, thought i'd post it here as fyi... onnidan.com/newsroom/188-july-sept-2020/7119-willie-lanier-launches-initiative-to-build-new-football-fields-at-hbcus.htmlWillie Lanier Launches Initiative to Build New Football Fields at HBCUsWillie Lanier, NFL Hall of Famer, and former Kansas City Chiefs great has announced an initiative to install state-of-the-art playing surfaces at nearly three-dozen HBCU football stadiums. Partnering with FieldTurf, one of the world's largest manufacturers and installers of artificial playing surfaces for athletic teams, the initiative is called the Honey Bear Project after Lanier's pro-football nickname. The duo seeks to raise $50 million over the next two years. "I'm excited about this project and I am confident we will get the support," says Lanier. "Many of the football fields at HBCU's are in bad shape. Some, like the one at Virginia Union University in my hometown of Richmond, are more than 100-years old and have never been replaced." FieldTurf recently installed a new football surface at VUU's Hovey Stadium, the second oldest football stadium in the United States behind Harvard Stadium which was completely resurfaced with hybrid turf technology five years ago. According to Lanier, poor field surfaces put Black college teams at a competitive disadvantage. "Poor surfaces make it tougher to recruit top high school players, who compare the fields to other schools that may have 'high tech' artificial surfaces," Lanier continues. "Bad football fields can hinder the quality of play because patchy uneven surfaces make good footing more difficult and can negatively impact player performance." Lanier is no stranger to giving back. With more than five decades of charitable service, Lanier hopes building new fields at HBCU's will be his lasting legacy to the game of football and to America's Black colleges. "With these fields, I hope to leave a bigger footprint on the game of football -- 'leveling the playing field' for the nation's Black colleges by replacing their old fields with new ones," Lanier emphasizes. I still like the AggieGrass(TM) business/research idea. There's got to be a North Carolina seed company that can partner with the school on this or we can do it independently. There's got to be a way! There's too many smart people at A&T.

Weren't Hilton's comments pre pandemic. His comments on Zoom Saturday did not imply there was money now available for turf or many other things on the collective wish list

Weren't Hilton's comments pre pandemic. His comments on Zoom Saturday did not imply there was money now available for turf or many other things on the collective wish list Folks on this site can't seem to grasp the reality that A&T does not have the funds for all of their ideas and dreams. It requires leadership from all of these folks, plus an army of Alums, friends, and major support and partnership from businesses/corporations to achieve that goal. The other schools in the Big South recognize this, and are moving to achieve better facilities. App State, UNC-C and others understood that they needed to raise funds to move up to FBS. They did it. Folks on this site have the dream of playing FBS football. Will never happen, if you expect the school to fund such a dream. It requires major financial support, which we don't have. I'm sure Mr. Hilton knows this, and understands that it can't be done with the funds we presently generate from athletics and our handful of supporters. AAF barely raises more money than the Old Greensboro Aggie Club.

There's got to be a way! There's too many smart people at A&T. Now this is a good idea. Also now is the time for some maintenance to the playing field. Aeration sowing of Rye grass seeds as well as fertilization particularly before frost date October 28 traditionally I think. While the optics of turf is nice we are in a new age of sustainability with natural grass.

We cannot make an assumption either way about funding. We cannot fall into this pessimistic woe is me stance. Nor can we assume our revenue streams will magically explode.in the next few years, Neither of these conditions should stop us from planning to have better facilities.
