'People don't want to get into this mud hole': One person applies for 12 open S.C. State board seats

COLUMBIA — Only one person applied for 12 open seats on the S.C. State University board in the state's first attempt to elect a new set of trustees since firing the entire board of the financially troubled college more than two years ago.
"That tells me people don't want to get into this mud hole," current board Chairman Charlie Way said Thursday.
The lack of board applicants comes just as S.C. State appears to be turning the corner financially and again threatens the public image of South Carolina's only public historically black college.
he terms of the seven current board members, who were appointed by the state-elected leaders to interim three-year terms, end June 30. The trustees agreed not to apply for the open seats, though some would stay if their appointments are extended so they did not have to go through the formal legislative screening process, Way said.
"We're not going to go on bended knee and ask for this job," said Way, who added that trustees have not sought expense payments since joining the board.
S.C. State needs at least five trustees to keep its accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Without it, S.C. State would no longer be eligible to give federal financial aid to its 2,900 students, a virtual death blow to the 121-year-old Orangeburg school.
