Bethune-Cookman University’s board of trustees spoke Wednesday on a conference call to discuss candidates to replace President Edison O. Jackson, who stepped down suddenly amid financial concerns.
B-CU officials did not announce any decisions. But a source with knowledge of the call told The News-Journal that retired judge Hubert Grimes had been selected to act as president while a search for an interim president continues. Grimes, who serves as the university’s lawyer, and board chairman Joe Petrock were unavailable late Wednesday to confirm the report. Grimes is also the director of the school’s Center for Law and Social Justice.
The discussion about the next president came a day after Jackson told the board he was retiring early — nearly a year before his contract was set to expire.
Jackson leaves the school amidst ever pressing financial concerns and unanswered questions surrounding the brokering of B-CU’s newest dormitory, one which will ultimately cost the school about $306 million.
A News-Journal investigation has shown that B-CU’s finances have been in decline in recent years. The school’s endowment dropped by $7 million and B-CU posted a $17.8 million operating loss, according to the school’s most recent tax documents from July 2015 to June 2016. At the same time, Jackson received a $40,000 raise, bringing his salary to $410,000.
