TV games expand A&T viewership but likely to shrink home crowd
Posted: Tuesday, September 27, 2016 6:46 pm By Jeff Mills jeff.mills@greensboro.com
GREENSBORO — You’ve got two choices. No. 1: Your football game can be shown live on ESPNU on a weeknight and watched well beyond your city’s borders. No. 2: Your football game can be played on the weekend and draw more people into your stadium. You can have one, but not the other. Which do you choose? N.C. A&T (0-0 MEAC, 2-1) will play three consecutive Thursday night TV games beginning this week when Hampton (1-0, 1-2) comes to Aggie Stadium for A&T’s conference opener. The Aggies host Norfolk State the next Thursday, then play their third Thursday game on the road at Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. “They’re huge. It’s very nice to be on national TV,” A&T athletics director Earl Hilton said. “Three in a row is unusual, and the only reason we did it was because it works out very well with our schedule. We come off a bye week to play the first one, then it’s Thursday-Thursday-Thursday, then it’s nine days until the next game on a Saturday. So there’s a lot of time built in on both sides and no short weeks.” For the rest of the story: www.greensboro.com/sports/college/tv-games-expand-a-t-viewership-but-likely-to-shrink/article_7e35514a-2b76-5aa5-a22d-3b96d51b9f67.html

Play on TV for the conference opener against Hampton but not against Norfolk. For the few non-Aggies that check out the game, I don't think it's worth the revenue loss.

Some times you got give up something to move forward; you are correct its a reduction in revenue this year but I think it way pay dividends in future years through recruiting and increased ticket gates. In addition we recovered that loss revenue with the two $300k FBS pay days:
"Good players make good football programs. And if those players are impressed by what they see on TV, they might become recruits".

Play on TV for the conference opener against Hampton but not against Norfolk. For the few non-Aggies that check out the game, I don't think it's worth the revenue loss. i agree that we may lose some revenue at the gate. but let’s be real for a moment. we do not make a ton of money at the gate for football games. years ago i recall the ad telling us that at the most, we “net” (not gross) approximately $125k to $150k when we “sellout” aggie stadium. but we normally don’t sellout except for ghoe nowadays, we normally average about 14k per game, and that includes ghoe. take ghoe away from our average, then we’d average about 12k per game. well, we’ll probably have around 12k in attendance tonight which is a little less than normal. and some of those not attending hold season tickets (like me) or student passes, so a&t still gets my money and students money who don’t go to that game, even though we’re not gonna be there. so i don’t think we’re gonna lose very much revenue by playing thursday nights. the “value” of the national exposure will easily exceed the revenue that we’ll lose at the gate by virtue of student recruitment which brings in additional tuition to a&t...

There's also a threat of rain. AGGIES DO! But, we don't do rain. I'm thinking 7-8K will show.

I acknowledge the loss in revenue ,but I think we gain more in national exposure , this helps with recruiting not just athletes but students also .

Playing HIU or Norfolk will not make any difference in the fan turn out because most of the new fans have no understanding of HBCU football history any way, and the one's that do or slowly fading with time. Now playing on National TV can work three fold and 1, Help your recruitment and saving the schools money on recruiting. 2. Both teams must play at a high level with Discipline and Precise Execution to keep the attention of the TV audience (not looking like two high school team) 3. Hold the Attention of the recruit or any player that is looking for a college football home by playing good hard nosed football. If the game is Entertaining and mistake / Penalty free , We have won on both ends. Also the fans that are no shows (with or without tickets ,Season or student ) they are already paid for so they should not count in this Conversation.

Is it suppose to be an all night rain or stop pretty early on?
In the middle of month end stuff here at work so depending on if I can get everything done debating on driving up but really don't want to be flying up and down 85 in a thunderstorm.

The chance of rain has diminished considerably in the forecast. The sun is coming out now. Only 30% and no storms are anticipated this evening, maybe a brief shower. Maybe.

The Thursday night games generally do better than Saturday games. The only possible revenue loss I see is with Lock TV sales. Also everyone is experiencing continued attendance declines so I expect us to see an overall drop again this year.

Very good crowd for a Thursday night national TV game - 14,467 in attendance. I strongly expect that we will exceed 15K next week with Norfolk State ( and their band) which should be a bigger draw for our fans than Hampton was.

Winning, good weather and Tarik should help pull a few more fans.

Truth be told my schedule is so crazy on the weekend that the Thursday option is not that bad. I got back to Raleigh later than I wanted...but I enjoyed myself. My son and I will be back next week for NSU.

I watched the game from Charleston last week. This week, I'm leaving right from work on the way to Greensboro.
