FAMU trustees set to vote on Mangum's exit plan Interim president could be named Thursday if board votes to remove Mangum By Byron Dobson, Democrat senior writer
Florida A&M University’s board of trustees could vote before noon Thursday on an exit plan for President Elmira Mangum, whose bosses found she lacked the leadership and communications skills to continue in the role. On Wednesday, members of the trustees’ Special Committee on Presidential Leadership voted 4-1 to approve terms of a plan under which Mangum would immediately step down. The action was precipitated in June, when the board took no action on extending her three-year contract, a move that automatically lets it expire in April. In a separate 4-1 vote, the committee agreed to pay Mangum $6,500 in attorney’s fees. SGA President Jaylen Smith voted against the deal. The plan calls for Mangum to step down and be placed on paid administrative leave until April. As a condition of her contract, Mangum would then be granted a one-year sabbatical at her full salary of $425,000. She would give board members notice by October 2017 instead of April 2018 if she intends to accept a tenured position in the College of Education. If she accepts the tenured post, she would be paid 90 percent of her current annual salary for the first year. In her second year, she would earn as much as the top-paid professor at the university. FAMU Update - Update: Mangum out at FAMU; Robinson in as interim Byron Dobson , Democrat senior writer
Elmira Mangum's tenure as president of Florida A&M University ended Thursday when trustees voted to approve an exit plan. Larry Robinson, who served as interim president twice before, will take on the challenge for a third time. The 10-1 vote to end Mangum's presidency was taken before a packed audience in the Grand Ballroom filled with students and alumni. Many had addressed trustees before the meeting, some speaking in support of Mangum, others against. The vote was taken following an update from trustee Thomas Dortch, chair of Special Committee on Presidential Leadership. Mangum agreed with the board's decision, saying, "I believe it is clear there is no way forward." Afterward, trustee chair Kelvin Lawson nominated Larry Robinson as interim president, drawing cheers from the much smaller crowd in the Grand Ballroom. The motion was approved unanimously.
