I also like that we don't do all kinds of bragging and boasting about what we got...we will do our talking in the field. imo, that’s because “on paper”, we’re not really signing too many of those 3 star “blue chip” fcs prospects for the most part. i think a lot of credit must go to coach broadway and his staff because it appears to me that coach doesn’t get all “geeked up” about 3 star recruits. instead, it seems to me that he’s primarily looking for “coachable” guys who have great potential with an emphasis on “speed”, academics, and guys who have a great work ethic. he takes these guys and develops them to become great football players who in many ways “outperform” those 3 star “blue chip” athletes. but they’ve got to be “coachable” and they’ve got to have a “great work ethic”. i mean, just look at guys like tarik cohen and khris gardin. neither of them came out of high school as highly acclaimed d1 recruits, didn’t make the shrine bowl, didn’t make the east/west all star game, and didn’t have any stars by their names according to rivals.com and the rest of those scouting services. but look at how they both turned out? none of those highly regarded high school accolades were bestowed upon them coming out of high school. yet, they’re both now fcs “all americans”! they’re both breaking records left and right at the fcs level! sure, they both came to a&t with raw talent. but certainly “great coaching” is why they’ve developed into all americans, leaving a lot of those so called 3 star “blue chip” athletes behind... This needs to be repeated over and over again by every Aggie when asked about our football program. Put it on a flyer. Pass it around. Its the truth!

This kid will earn a scholarship in two years. His first year playing football at all was his Junior year in high school. A lot of upside.

We used to overlook local raw talent like these kids. They always seemed to end up at places like Howard or Hampton and then come back and haunt the hell out us down the road in a year or two.

They are. The point being that we are now a far more attractive place from a academic, football, and social standpoint to where our local kids aren't necessarily opting for other FCS, D-2, or out of state opportunities like they used to, be they scholarship or walk-on student athletes. We're doing a much better job in recruiting in our backyard by laying down the proper ground work in building relationships with the high schools in our area.

this is what burns me up! here are “3” north carolina products (one is my homeboy!) who have signed to play for norfolk state. i swear, that doggone lattrell scott is bringing in some very nice recruits to nsu and it burns me up when out of state schools snatch up our guys...

N.C. State, East Carolina Transfers Among 3 New Spartan Football Recruits DT Middleton, DB Purdie and HS Athlete Spencer Join Decorated Signing Class
Matt Michalec, Asst. AD/Communications
5/31/2016 12:49:00 PM
NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head football coach Latrell Scott continued to enhance his incoming recruiting class with the addition of three more players, including a pair of Division I FBS transfers. Scott announced Tuesday the signing of three North Carolina natives: N.C. State transfer defensive tackle Deshaywn Middleton, East Carolina transfer defensive back Cody Purdie and high school athlete Johnathan Spencer.
Middleton (6-2, 305) will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at NSU after spending two seasons, including a redshirt year, at N.C. State. Middleton redshirted the 2014 season for the Wolfpack and did not see any game action in 2015.
A native of Winston-Salem, N.C. and a product of Parkland High School, Middleton was rated a three-star recruit by ESPN, Rivals, Scout and 247 Sports coming out of high school. Scout, Rivals and ESPN all ranked him among the top 100 high school defensive tackles nationally in the class of 2014. Middleton was a first-team All-Piedmont Triad Conference selection and an All-Northwest honoree at Parkland. He registered six sacks and 30 tackles despite being limited to 4.5 games as a senior. Middleton recorded 45 tackles, 15 sacks and three forced fumbles as a junior.
"We expect Deshaywn to be able to make an immediate impact along our revamped defensive line," Scott said. "We feel he will fit well into the scheme we want to run and he has the talent to be a big difference maker for us in the MEAC."
Purdie (5-11, 190) will have two years of eligibility left after playing in four games each of the last two seasons at ECU. Purdie made one tackle in four games last season, and notched a pair of stops in four games as a true freshman in 2014.
A native of New Bern, N.C., Purdie was a standout defensive player and running back at New Bern High School. A two-star recruit according to 247 Sports, Purdie helped lead New Bern to the North Carolina state 4A title as a junior, logging 143 tackles, 20 for loss, and 10 sacks as a linebacker that season. He made his biggest contributions as a senior at the running back position, rushing for a team-high 1,317 yards and 11 touchdowns.
"Cody has good speed and is a physical defensive back. He'll get a look at corner and safety for us after playing both positions at ECU," Scott said. "He was a two-way starter on a state championship team in high school, which speaks to his athleticism." Spencer (5-11, 180) was a standout defensive back, receiver and special teams player at Middle Creek High School in Apex, N.C. Spencer was a first-team All-Southwest Wake Athletic Conference performer at both defensive back and receiver. He was chosen as conference Offensive Player of the Year and was also chosen Co-Special Teams Player of the Year as a return specialist. Spencer led Middle Creek to a 14-1 record, the conference championship and an appearance in the state 4A semifinals. He had two touchdowns covering at least 90 yards in one game last fall, recording a 95-yard TD reception and a 100-yard interception return for a score in a game against Cary High School.
"Johnathan is a dynamic athlete," Scott said. "He has the ability to be a two-way player for us and has the potential to help us in the return game, as well."
Middleton, Purdie and Spencer join an incoming recruiting class that now stands at 22 players as of Tuesday.

All seem like top notch recruits especially the defensive tackle (reads like he just has not lived up to his potential yet)....We may have contacted all three - sometimes kids just want to get out the state along with their fresh start.

So did any of these cats actually have scholarship opportunities that they turned down to walk-on with us? I get the feeling that two of them are probably getting academic scholarships even though they are technically walk-ons. As far as Norfolk's new signees, I think Middleton's going to turn out to be a bust. State had converted him to o-line which means he wasn't doing diddly squat on the d-line. The other theory might be State converted him to o-line out of necessity due to lack of depth at the o-line, but Middleton was supposedly at best third string at guard. Hence the transfer. The reality of his situation is he probably knew he wouldn't fare that much better on our depth chart. Purdie: Played four games as a freshman, four games as a sophomore. I'm assuming there was an injury or three in there somewhere. Made one tackle in those four games as a sophomore. I assume he had to at least be playing some special teams. If he couldn't crack the depth chart at ECU based on coverage skills he would never survive our defensive scheme. Maybe as a back up rover and on special teams. Maybe. Now Spencer sounds like our type of guy. Either he wanted out of the state or his scholastic abilities were shaky, period. My guess is choice B, but I'm hopeful Norfolk will nurture his scholastics if that's actually the case. All in all my reaction is meh.

yeah, i kinda had the same impression about middleton. but not purdie. obviously i’m a little biased about purdie because purdie is my homeboy, but its not that unusual for db’s not to have a ton of tackles.
to me, having played in 4 games at ecu both years he was there says a lot to me given the level of play that ecu competes at. i mean, ecu ain’t no “slouch”. they beat my childhood dream team unc tarheels like a friggin’ drum (70-41) the last time unc played ecu in 2014 and beat ‘em 55-31 in 2013. so ecu gets much respect from me...
