That's a pretty blanket statement. There are a myriad number of reasons to lose a kid to ANY school. We are the largest hbcu. If you want to go to a small school that immediately crosses us off the list. If you want to attend a rural school, that crosses us off the list. If you want to attend a school in a major metropolitan city... You get the point. If you're choosing a school based only on football, then maybe we shouldn't lose a kid to a ciaa school unless you just really would rather try to make the d2 playoffs than the celebration bowl. But I really hope our program is beyond the point that we're chasing after kids that are choosing schools based only on football. Hey Cohen probably was on some DII recruiting board before we stepped up and gave him a scholarship. Talent is talent, no matter where you find it. Who knows the kid we got from JC Smith may have had a Smith connection through his family or coaches. If our coaching staff thinks this kid can play for us, I don't care if The Sisters of the Poor University was recruiting him. Amen I agree, if the kid can Ball and can hold down the class room I'm all in on recruiting him. A&T and many HBCU's and some BCS/FCS schools like NDSU have built their foundation on recruiting players based on their ability and not the stars or division/class they played in at the high school level . As a coach once said at a "Clinic we don't recruit stars we recruit players because I have never seen a star make a tackle, throw a pass or run a touchdown in a game but I have seen players play like stars and do it" !!

The local beat writer is very impressed with the kids out of WVA and is upset that the local schools didn't offer. Dooms assessment on the kids and their options is on point.

Johnson is an extremely powerful north-south runner between the tackles, something we have been in need of for long, long while. He benches 400 pounds and still in high school? That folks is a grown azz man.

Savion Johnson had looks from several FBS schools after his sophomore year running for nearly 1500 yds. Tore his ACL during pre-season drills in 2014 and the big schools faded away. After a year of rehab he lead his team to State Championship this past season. Great human interest story. This article was written last summer. Johnson Finding His Seam after Lost SeasonSteve Novotney June 13, 2015 1 Comment They are like tunnels with lights at the end of them, and those pathways guide Savion Johnson to more yardage, more touchdowns, and more victories, and that’s been the case since his single-digit days of donning a Little Patriots uniform. And he sees them, everywhere, even away from a football field. “All of the time. All. Of. The. Time,” Savion said. “If I’m in the car, if I’m listening to music, if I’m walking down the hallway in school, or if I am on the field, I am seeing the holes and the cuts I need to make. I don’t really have a favorite move to break a tackle because I just always do what comes naturally so I can get away and get to the end zone,” he continued. “That’s what it’s all about – performing the best I can for my team so we can win as many games as possible.” The rest of the story weelunk.com/johnson-finding-his-seam-8678/

Johnson only runs a 4.6 forty. Might be a better fit at fb or te.

Johnson only runs a 4.6 forty. Might be a better fit at fb or te. There's straight line speed then there's football speed. How guys move laterally, how a back makes cuts, his vision, slipping tackles, and then the ability to accelerate through a hole is far more important on the football field than their track time, at least for an every down running back. Remember Emmitt Smith was a 4.6 combine guy when he came out of Florida and was considered too slow by a lot of NFL teams.

"only" 4.6. Lol.
Keyes runs a 4.7 if he's lucky.
Yes, the cat ain't Cohen, but who is? The 4.6 is probably just as fudged as every other 40 time from a high school kid, but 4.6 is plenty fast enough. Especially when most of the cats chasing you to the end zone run 4.7s and up.

South Charleston's Grier commits to North Carolina A&T
Feb 01, 2016 8:32 PM
From staff reportsSouth Charleston senior quarterback Kentre Grier announced via Twitter Sunday evening that he has committed to play football at North Carolina A&T next fall. The dual-threat signal-caller completed 138 of 192 passes (72 percent) for 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns against just four picks, while rushing for another 1,010 yards and 11 scores on 117 carries in leading the Black Eagles to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the Class AAA playoffs. Grier, who was named the Gatorade state player of the year as a junior after accounting for 4,523 yards and 59 touchdowns, will be joined at A&T by a couple of Wheeling Park standouts in running back Savion Johnson and receiver Elijah Bell. Johnson rushed for 1,884 yards and 26 TD's on 276 carries, while Bell hauled in 50 catches for 1,214 yards and 17 scores in leading the Patriots to the Class AAA state title. i’m a firm believer that “speed kills” and to me, that attribute is at the very top of my list for rb’s and wr’s. if i have my dreathers, i’m a “speed first” kinda guy. however, speed is not the only attribute on my list, there’s still a bevy of other attributes that are almost just as important as speed such as vision, agility, coordination, fundamentals, toughness, power, pass catching, and footwork to name a few.
having said that, i think a 4.6 forty speed rb at the fcs level is not gonna typically break off too many 70, 80, or 90 yard touchdown runs like cohen does. but depending on his other attributes, very well could churn out a bunch of 20 and 30 yard bursts more frequently than just a speed guy.
shoot, mike mayhew wasn’t blazing fast but had two or three 1,000 yard plus rushing seasons. mike ferguson wasn’t very fast either and he too had 1,000 yard rushing seasons at a&t.
so i wouldn’t say 4.6 speed is such a bad thing, but he’d better have strong attributes in other areas if he’s gonna cut it at the fcs level...

Johnson only runs a 4.6 forty. Might be a better fit at fb or te. It really not the hold 40 time that you look at to be truthful ok. It the first 10yrds that count the most !! his first steps, How quick the back can hit the hole or get to the outside. His father was Daryl “Boogie” Johnson Gatorade West Virginia Player of the Year, and finished as a 4th Team USA Today High School All American. As a redshirt freshman, Boogie started for Oklahoma State. He entered the National spot light on a Thursday night, televised game, against a highly ranked Nebraska team that was led by Tommy Frasier and Lawrence Philips. In that game Boogie accounted for more than 160 total yards, 130 of them rushing. He helped lead Oklahoma State into a 13-3 halftime advantage, though Nebraska came back to win 23-13 in the final. During that season, Boogie rushed for just over 600 yards in 7 games before his season was cut short by a twisted knee injury.Tore his knee again that ended his football career . So the kid is a player

I think speed is what elevated our program to the next level. 4.6 a'int bad but he's not likely to be a game breaker. He can be a 1000 yard rusher in the same vein as Mayhew and Ferguson but I think we are more effective with a speed back. I still wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at another position.
