I know I was one of the more vocal fans against installing artificial turf but we have got to fix our football field. I've gotten use to our field looking like the back lot at the circus but this year it's been even worst looking. I've gotten emails from Aggies in California and Michigan that watched our recent games on TV and wanted to know why the field looked so bad. In the past I'd blamed it on droughts, monsoons, grass fungus and other blatant lies but this year I had no answer. I know we've had a dry summer but we've had lots of rain this football season. And since no one plays on the field except us, it shouldn't look as dead and chewed up as it does.
I think it's time for us to take two steps to correct this problem before next football season. Step #1...fire the current grown crew. I'm sorry but I can grow better grass just working on the weekends. Step #2...with the new grounds crew, take an extended road trip to talk with NC State and Carolina Panthers' ground crew to see how they do it. NC State is nationally know for their research in grass and I'm sure their farmers would love to talk with our farmers! I don't expect us to have the Carolina Panthers' money and resources to maintain our field but between the two crews, we should learn something. Who knows, maybe Jerry Richardson will donate some grass seed...it's the least he can do since he built UNC Charlotte a darn stadium.
You would think that a 125 year old university with "Agricultural" in it's name could keep grass green but obviously we cannot. If we are going to have more games on TV we have got to fix this problem now!
