NC A&T holds off Hampton in final minutes, 64-61
Associated Press
NORFOLK, Va. -- Bruce Beckford scored 24 points, Khary Doby added 12 with 10 rebounds, and North Carolina A&T held on to beat Hampton 64-61 on Saturday night.
The Aggies (5-14, 2/3 Mid-Eastern Athletic) had a four-point lead with 16:41 to play and Hampton went cold over the next 3:12, allowing NC A&T to go up by 12 points. The Aggies then experienced a scoring drought of their own, going 5:57 without a field goal and the Pirates rallied back to tie the score at 53-all with 4:38 remaining. Beckford went 5 of 6 from the line in the final three minutes, and Hampton missed two 3-point attempts to keep NC A&T in front.
Beckford was 8 of 11 from the floor and 7 of 10 from the free-throw line, as the Aggies combined for 52.2-percent shooting.
Dwight Meikle scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates (8-9, 4-1).

This is a big win. Congrats to Cy and the squad......3 out of 4 wins....all D-I!! We (I) asked for progress. It looks like this is what we're getting. This team plays hard every night. If they keep adding more and more smarts with the same effort with each successive game, this will leads to more positive outcomes.

Bruce played as if he was on a Mission! You could actually see it in his face, and body language. I don't know if it had anything to do with lasts years game at Hampton or not, but Bruce wasn't about to let the AGGIES leave HU's Convocation Center without the Win! All around great effort from the team!

We really need to recogize the contributions of Abdullah playing 36 minutes going 4/5 with 3 assist and 4 to's. He deserves a ton of credit for our improved play over the past 4 games...

Aggie Pride! I don't think anyone expected us to win. Hopefully, this gives Coach Cy some of his swagger back, and the players confidence for the remainder of the season. We have been in all of our MEAC games, with only one player averaging double figures.

OT: Bruce Beckford has 880 career points with 12 regular season games remaining... he's on pace to go over 1,000 points this season.
It's been Bruce and a lot of inconsistency this year. Teams are figuring out AB now, so he may not consistently produce.... but that means less help on Bruce... and if 1-2 guys step up.... we can get still get the big wins like last night.
We only had 46 FG attempts compared to 64 for Hampton. That's due to Hampton having 11 assists to 11 TOs and 14 offensive rebounds. We won because we defended well (26-64 from the field, only 18% from 3-pt) and they shot FTs worse than we did (5-12, 42%). Bruce had 9 TOs on his own... it just shows that we are making an emphasis to get him the ball. He has to continuing growing in the decision-making part of his game as the star player.
But congrats on a big win...... on to Norfolk!!

great win!! man, looks like i'm gonna miss a lot of aggie basketball games this year because i referee a lot of games that conflict with our schedule. but i'm glad we got the win and it goes to show what a little bit of "patience" will do for you.
we've had folks "prematurely" calling for coach cy's head despite the hardships he's gone through in his personal life and despite the "youth" of his team. we're generally an "instant gratification" fanbase that gives no consideration to "real life" issues such as death in the immediate family. so i'm happy for coach cy and i hope the improvement continues. and if it does, it'll bode well for the future because we've got such a very "young" team and essentially the entire team returns next season.
great job guys! i reflect back on the cal state win which to me instilled confidence in our guys that apparently has carried over. nice wins over ssu and hampton since then, and a close loss to scsu. guys are playing much better ball now, let's hope we can keep it going...
