There's nothing wrong with being a walk-on. Curtis Deloatch turned out alright as a former walk-on. The kid has an opportunity and hopefully he'll take advantage of it and continue to get better. Wallace Miles was a walk-on also .

N.C. A&T has added another late recruit for this coming season with the signing of Jimmy Ellis (6-4,200) WR/TE/OLB from C. B. Aycock High School in Pikeville, NC. Ellis signed his LOI back on 6/17. He signed as a "Preferred" Walk-On. Someone please remind me what that really means. I understand on scholarship, partial scholarship, and walk on but what does the "preferred" part mean? Preferred Walk-ons normally have a scholarship waiting on them in year two as long as they do what they are supposed to do their first season and shows they can help the team the following year. Its also normally(in our case) a kid that is borderline FCS and Div2. It might be because he is light in the azz and you don't know if he can even bulk up to play at this level. Basically its just a handshake. Keep your nose clean and work hard and we'll take care of you. Where as a regular walk-on doesn't have that hand shake. In this particular case I think the kid and coaches need to determine what he will be in college. He was a jack of all trades, master of nothing. They need to assign him ONE position so he can become great at it. Then he would be worth the scholly. He looked like a better DB then WR to me. Strong Safety specifically.

Great kid to red-shirt as well and see how is does in practice as well as off season weight training. This is the type kid you red-shirt first year, some special team as a red shirt freshman and by his sophomore year he grew an inch and gained 30 pounds.

Also, as in my son's case, though he was recruited pretty strongly, he's given preferred walk on status because he received an academic scholarship from the university. They don't have to burn an athletic scholarship on him this way and means more schollies for other kids.

Great to have a kid here that has proven athletic and academic ability, able to free up scholarships for other players.
