She was the last remaining staffer who stood tall for Space. Figured it was only a matter of time.

Well maybe a tiny bit surprised. Jones has been a part of in the A&T Athletic Department as long as I can remember all the way back to our undergrad days in the mid-to-late 70's and much like Space, a long time fixture around A&T and Greensboro.
I hate to see long time coaches who literally put in a whole career in at one place get the axe. However, simply based on the past half decade of performances on the field I am not at all shocked that a move was made.

mamie is my homegirl, i knew her way back when she was a little tom boy growing up in new bern. she was a great athlete at a&t and had a wonderful career as softball coach too. so i’m sad to see her leave if in fact that is the case. good luck to you, mamie!

Well, based on just the record of this year's softball team, I can understand why she may have been released. I hate it also when one of our own is asked to leave. I hope the best for her.
I tell you one thing, this AD definitely believes in "Be good or be gone!" I feel really bad about anyone losing their job but this is college sports and a big part of that is winning.

I brought this topic up in another thread back in March and was criticized by fellows Aggies for suggestion that something should be done about women's softball. I hate to see anyone loose his/her job but I am sure the A.D. will get someone great in here to take softball to the next level. Thanks Mamie Jones for all that you have done for our Women's Softball Program.

Was Mamie on that National Championship softeball team when A&T won it back in the 70's?? I can't remember if she was or not. This was before women"s sports was part of the NCAA.

We have a national championship in softball? Is that an HBCU title?

No, its not an HBCU title, it is however a slow-pitch national title. She is the coach that switched us to fast pitch though.

I thought it would be a AIAW title but that was early eighties...hey 4XL since our national championship is not an NCAA title, is that the reason we dont have it listed in our historical records?
