Funny, I was just thinking Hemphill would be a guy they could move to DE. He is strong and a big hitter, but maybe just a tad too slow to play the middle linebacker spot.
With Russell coming back next week, I think Hemphill would be the odd man out anyway. He's too good to just keep on the bench.
Hell, he might can become a Dwight Freeney type.

Also, I would banish Shaheed to as far down the bench as possible. His technique on those two touchdown passes was horrible. Dude is the 2007 version of Booker '"Toast" Washington.
However lines up against him is guaranteed to have a career day.

Hemphill would work at the DE spot too.... Ditto on Shaheed..Great minds think alike... (I'm scared to think of the game plan that PV is putting together as they watch this film, especially if that QB is as talented as the articles I've read have said)

Another observation from Saturday is that we have the best punter in the entire conference, maybe all of black college football.
Woodson really bailed us out in the field position battle. He has both distance and hang time on his kicks.

(We need to play to Herbs strengths and implement an option type attack that utilizes his athletiscm and complement some of the other guys we have.) Strengths? He's a running QB that isn't that fast or elusive. Is that actually a strength?

I think he'll get better. Neither Herb nor Wayne could read a defense worth a damn. Once, I can blame the qb. Twice?
So I'm sure the coaches will be working on teaching him better. Taking him back to the basics and simplifying the game plan.

It is difficult to say how well the team will do this year after watching just one game that was played against an opponent that is still essentially an average D-II team. Everyone saw improvements from last year but last year’s team was simply a sandlot organization and played like it.
Game communications – I did not see confusion between the sidelines play callers and on the field play callers.
Defense speed – the defense was able to run down most of the runs but they did give up runs of 55, 32 and 29 yards.
Defensive line and linebackers – defenders attack the WSSU ball carrier better this year and got a few tackles for losses but WSSU runners were able too many times to run through the first and second tacklers’ arm grasp.
Running backs and offensive line – look good, average about 3.3 yards a carry and had a long run of 17 yards but only had one other long run of 9 yards against a defense that is weak on the defensive line.
QB- mixed review. QB had good game command half the time. I also say scrapped that QB option until later in the season. Miller is coming off a knee operation and you have better runners at running back. Miller needs to concentrate on throwing the ball and making better decisions when passing.
DBs - this was suppose to be the gem of the defense according to those who watched the fall camp practices but they were far from it in last Saturday’s game. They got beat on those slants with regularity. The DBs also have to improve their tackling.
Punter - is very good, all-conference selection.
Coaches – better organized. We will see how good they are this Saturday. The coaches will be earning their money this week to correct the mistakes of last Saturday. According to Coach Fobbs – as I was told - most football teams make their biggest week-to-week improvement between the first and second game.

We would all be rejoicing in relief if not for those 3 interceptions.
I agree with aggiejazz. We should see some adjustments next saturday or at least the people that are makeing that trip will see some adjustments. At least we will have a game film or stats to scheme against.
The only obvious coaching error was not properly defending that slant. The outside linebacker never even turned to look at the wide out. He had his back to him(pre-snap) both plays, it wasn't the corners fault. Unless you are in a bump coverage you cant defend the slant without linebacker help. The linebacker didn't take his read properly and got the DB burned for it several times. Stop looking at who was scored on and look at WHY they scored.
Now if that corner was in bump coverage because the outside backer was blitzing(anyone remember) then excuse my rant. It was all on the corner. I dont remember it that way though.

I was thinking the same thing about the 3 interceptions. Herb 's job is to manage the game and get the ball to the play makers. We can't afford to have 3 interceptions. we have to play mistake free football. We also have to cut down on the penalties.
Hopefully the coaches are seeing some of the same things mentioned in this thread

Winston definitely did not have a answer for Chancellor or Speedy. I felt like Fobbs should have played them more or even both at the same time. I also felt that Herb was staring down his receivers and I also saw Lawrence and Caldwell open at times. He was staring down Walls to many times throughout the game and where was the TE from Cali Brett Fisher. I was impress with the linebackers and Croley from Clemson. Winston was not a better team than us I just think we cannot turn the ball over. What gets me is the Two Hometown Kids(H. Miller & T. Bess)had the worst games out of anybody. How in the hell does the center get so many holding calls. The O-line Coach K. Ray has to call some better plays than he did on Saturday. He was to conservative in the first half and Fobbs needs to call Melvin Spears to help Ray with his Playbook.
