decks....Never would have thought we had those numbers (MEAC) for the tourney.
Of course, I have not attended the whole tourney in recent years.....just basically the one and done game ???and maybe another one after that game.
I think we (MEAC) could promote other activities or work in conjuncture with promoters to include more events for the wekend on the social side ;D!

Man it is amazing what you can learn on this site! I too am surprised that the MEAC Tournament actually was number 11 in the nation in attandance. Just think what that number would be if A&T ever became a consistent winner. I have actually attend one mens Tournament game in the last 15 years and based on this year's poor team, it will be a few more years before I go to another game. 40,000 people actually showed up to see those crappy MEAC games? Amazing!

Lol, it would help if they marketed it better. Why not make all schools in the MEAC be on spring break that week. And bring in big acts and events so students will flock to Winston? But again, who am i? I have in a lot of things and people. The MEAC and Dennis Thomas just don't happen to be one of them. Next your going to tell me how great his leadership has been for the MEAC. Come on man, be honest. His leadership can be described in two words, Legacy Bowl ...... I agree, the MEAC leadership has definitely left a lot on the table. No argument there. I'm also not defending our past when it comes to A&T. All I've been saying is the AD is new. You have to give him a chance. No matter what others have done. Who says i'm not? All i want is a plan or some kind of knowledge of what he is thinking? We go thru AD , after AD , after AD. And they are tied to their hires. All i ask is what is his thinking process and criteria? Does he have to tell me, OF COURSE NOT. But why not try something different when all your predecessors went and did it the usual way and have been fired? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result......................

This convo is getting old cause you keep contradicting yourself. First you want a plan, then you dont, now you do AGAIN. I believe, I dont believe. I have no faith, but yet I'm going to give him a chance. I want a plan, but dont want a plan. Later man.

I attend the tournament every year and most of the games (men and women) are very competitive. Even though A&T is never in it, Aggies still show up in good numbers for the championship game. These numbers are shocking to me (MEAC 40,046, SWAC 7,046). I don't know why I assumed the SWAC drew better than that!!!!

I'd be interested to see the same numbers for the CIAA and then that'll show us how we measure up. Also, the listing could be a little misleading because, the MEAC tourney is a Mens & Womens tourney, which I would think would bring up the attendance some. We all know the major conferences don't do this.

The CIAA Tournament would rank #3 right behind the Big East.
The reason folks get the impression the MEAC Tourney is so bad is because they're insistent on comparing us to the CIAA. That needs to stop because the CIAA is just a unique event. Instead we should be comparing ourselves to the non BCS D-I conferences. The best way to grow the MEAC Tournament is to improve the product we're putting on the floor. It's hard to attract fans when you only have 2 teams with records above .500. The SWAC should scrap their tournament.

Professor, why don't you contact Hilton or McAlpin to have some of your questions answered? Both are very approachable. Heck, I once emailed McAlpin with some concerns I had and he surprisingly gave me a phone call the same day. I'm surprised Hilton didn't reply to your email because that's something he prides himself on. Perhaps Thrilla can arrange an interview with both of em at some point in the future?

i haven't been to the meac tournament since it left raleigh (had a darn good time too!) and that was the last time we made it to friday's round of games. ironically, meac tournament attendance has increased every year since then except last year. i believe it declined a little last year.
also, keep in mind that in '09 (which is the year of the stats shown), wssu was still transitioning to the meac and they played bonus games against nccu which attracted additional fans. plus, if i don't have my years mixed up, '09 was the year that the lady aggies won the tournament championship, so our crowd gave the tournament a big boost too.
attendance at the championship games has been decent pretty much every year. enough folk were there to keep us from being totally embarrassed on tv. but if a&t's men could just make it to the semi's (preferably the finals), you'd see a big jump in attendance in my opinion...

How much more competitive are MEAC Tourney schools than CIAA schools in Basketball? This generation of leadership would never stand for it, but there is more sense in combining the Basketball Tournaments in a Big Dance Scenario than Football. You wouldn't break-up the MEAC/SWAC/CIAA Tourneys, everyone would still get their cut and it would bring more attention to all programs.

Are you saying the MEAC and SWAC should forgo the NCCA tournament to have their own? OR are you saying the MEAC and SWAC should combine their tournaments and the winner get the auto-bid? Or maybe neither? LOL By the way, the top tier of the CIAA could play in the MEAC no problem. But if I could recruit players that couldn't qualify for Div1 so could I.

Monster, I think it would interesting to see the tourneys have their own championships like they do now. Then the top 2 teams from each conference receive auto-bids to the Big HBCU Dance and the winning team gets an automatic NCAA bid along with the tourneys that get to go automatically. In essence if A&T wins the MEAC but lose the Big HBCU Dance to Shaw then both schools go on to the NCAA Tourney..... It is only a notion but I'd be interested in hearing counterpoints.

there is "nothing" to gain by meac teams beating ciaa teams. ciaa teams would have the "emotional" advantage everytime. why would the meac want to put itself in that position?
me personally, i can't get with anything that resembles the legacy bowl. and the meac playing against the ciaa puts the meac at a disadvantage, i'm sure meac coaches wouldn't go for that...

Oldschool saying that is like saying an ACC team should never play a MEAC team, yes its the same division but what is a Big conference team gaining by playing a HBCU? How are the MEAC teams disadvantaged? A good team is a good team. No matter how much passion a NCCU has unless they are good they wont a beat Duke.
(Sorry Teams in the CIAA would never have to play a good MEAC team. Only the conference bests would compete and I think the competition would be evenly matched.)
We have seen through the years, the level of play in D1 & D2 conferences go back and forth. If ECSU can beat a good MEAC team then they deserve the right to compete. I think by looking over a All-HBCU Basketball Tourney we admit our complex with wanting to be accepted. It wouldn't be like we are opting out of NCAA either, if anything we would make it more accessible for smaller schools. We would get more coverage, more attention and more talent all while still being viable competition in the NCAA.
