I just took a look at the bracket. Let's just say I would hate to be an AD and have a few of these teams in the playoffs.
ODU's reward for beating Norfolk State? They get to travel to Statesboro, Georgia on a week's notice.
Maine gets a first found bye and somehow has to get to Boone, NC. At least they had two weeks' notice.
Say Stony Brook, what do you get for beating Albany? You get to find a way from New York to Huntsville, Texas.
Central Arkansas, what's the going fare to Missoula, Montana?
Maybe UCA can just pal up with New Hampshire since UNH has to go to Bozeman, Montana the same day. Imagine if (or when) they both lose and are on the same charter flight.
Lucky JMU only has to go to Fargo, North Dakota.
Wofford can run option all the way to Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The only one I see with a palatable trip is Lehigh going to Towson.
How much does the NCAA pay for travel costs? I see close to a million bucks tied up in this one round right here.

Yes the NCAA reimburses the schools for their travel expenses. Its in the handbook. Now if the school wants to send the band then they are on their own.

I'm too lazy to look at the handbook since I spent half the day counting how many FBS players certain d-2 schools have. Is there a cap on how much they'll reimburse? Like 60 players and 10 coaches or something like that. I'm just speculating, but it seriously looks to be close to a million dollars for one week's travel right there. That's a hell of a lot of reimbursement. And then you'll have two more rounds after that.

They do reimburse. Thats THE MAIN reason the first round opponents are always close to each other. It's for their pockets, not the schools.

Trust and believe, The NCAA ain't broke . Plus most of these schools make for 2 weeks. So ODU should have made plans to get to Georgia Southern and just had them as tentative should they win

And yes, there is a cap on the number of players, coaches and administrators you can travel with. The only thing a school will not be reimbursed for is the travel expenses for those such as the band and others outside of the capped number. So essentially, a school will not lose money if they decide to travel to all playoff games but they lose that chance to generate additional revenue by hosting. ODU made a nice profit off of their home game with NSU even after giving the NCAA their cut.

Here's the thing that can put a strain on an HBCU budget....or in our case. A&T receives its athletic budget July 1 for the school year. I don't think they build in a cushion in case a team makes the playoffs or post-season tournament. So, the effect causes the department to operate in the red by fronting costs to travel to a post season game. Then...if a school wants to send the band and cheering squads etc. That's money that you didn't budget. Then if you send more people to the game that's over the head count that the NCAA is willing to reimburse...you've blown your budget. It's easy to do.

A few years ago I posted something about "does the administration really want us to win?" I talked about the financial cost a successful team can bring, and how our alums generally don't cover those costs with increased donations and ticket sales.
HBCUs have a lot of extra variables that pwcs don't have. (bands, large contingents of hangers-on, etc.) that many think are just indispensible come playoff time. Home games are pretty much our only hope, but by and large, we lose those too.

The NCAA looks at Fan Attendance more then your record in some cases. That has more of and Influence on how they pick the teams. Now say A&T makes the play offs and Attendance is say 19,000 per game. They would have a good chance to host a playoff game. The NCAA likes to get their Bang for the Bucks.

But we'd have to bid on the game.

If we have won the MEAC and are averaging 19,000 or a little more in home attendance by this time next year then putting up a 30-50K bid for a playof game in Greensboro will be a no brainer.
