Babynupe that how I fell also. Going in we have a 50/50 chance> c'mon, saabman. did you really think we had a 50/50 chance of beating app state? nobody in their right mind should think we have a 50% probability of beating app state this year. that's like saying if we play them 4 times this year, we'd beat them twice. do you honestly believe that?

In terms of probability, saabman is correct. There are only 2 possible outcomes: win or lose. Therefore, it is a 50% probability of winning and a 50% probability of losing. It appears that you are speaking in terms of "likelihood" vice "probability". If that's the case, then anyone can reasonably "assume" that we'd lose because that outcome is highly probable or likely. However, games are played on the field and not on paper. A win is NEVER guaranteed.

you're correct, frat. there are only two possible outcomes. but "possibility" and "probability" are two different things. yes, there's only two possible outcomes (win or lose), but that doesn't mean there's always a 50% "probability" of winning or losing. that just means there's only two possible outcomes (actually there's more than two, such as forfeit or cancellation), but i get your point.
if a&t played the defending super bowl champion green bay packers, it would be "possible" to beat them (though it would take a miracle or some unforeseen event). but the "probability" of defeating green bay would essentially be zero. so i don't want to play on words, but games this season against teams like app state aren't winnable games for us "barring" a miracle or some unforeseen event...

I feel ya OLESCHOOLAGGIE :THAT'S JUST THE WAY I THINK!! AND THAT IS WHAT I TRY TO TEACH MY KIDS ("DON'T GO INTO ANY SITUATION THINKING THAT YOU WILL LOSE BECAUSE IF YOU DO YOU HAVE ALREADY LOST") . AND THAT IS THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT A&T. NOW ASK YOUR- SELF DID YOU THINK THAT WE WOULD BEAT (MSU) THIS YEAR BASED ON LAST YEARS LOSE??? I DID!! I DON'T LOSE UNTIL I LOSE!!!
DO YOU REMEMBER BACK IN THE DAY WHEN THE COLLEGE ALL-STARS WOULD PLAY THE NFL CHAMPS. NOW IN August 2, 1963 College All-Stars 20 Green Bay Packers 17. NOW DO YOU SEE MY POINT.

saabman & OSA,
I think the confusion is just semantics. I understand OSA's point. However, I know that math is an exact science. You can't infuse subjectivity into it. "Probability" is determined by using the number of "possible" outcomes. It's not a play on words. It's just knowing when/how to apply them.

DO YOU REMEMBER BACK IN THE DAY WHEN THE COLLEGE ALL-STARS WOULD PLAY THE NFL CHAMPS. NOW IN August 2, 1963 College All-Stars 20 Green Bay Packers 17. NOW DO YOU SEE MY POINT. saabman, as a former coach myself, absolutely i understand where you're coming from. if i'm broadway in our locker room before the app state game, no way in hail would i concede to my team a loss to app state. despite the odds, i'm gonna do everything in my power to win the game even if my team is completely outmanned. as a coach or athlete, the phrase "give up" doesn't exist in our vocabulary. but what a coach tells his team is different from what fans tell each other. a coach has to prepare the minds of his players to compete at their highest level no matter who they're playing against. the thought of having no chance of beating app state would never come to my mind "as a coach". if they have twice as many schollies as we do, then i'm trying to figure out how to beat (not just compete with) a team with twice as many schollies. so, i understand what you're saying. psychology is a "huge" part of athletics and no good coach will plant a seed of defeat into the minds of his/her team. so i'm totally with you in that regard. but on this message board as fans, we don't have to play psychological warfare. we don't have to go out on the field and compete. so we can be straight shooters at bdv, it won't have any impact on the game. we can say "truthful" things that coaches can't tell their team. so what i state at bdv as a fan, isn't necessarily what i would tell my aggie team if i were coaching. as a coach, no matter what the odds of losing are, i'd never tell my team we can't win a game...
