C.J. Washington didn't have to go far to continue his college football career.
After receiving his degree from Wake Forest in May, Washington — a 5-foot-6, 160-pound defensive back who played at Carver High — moved across town, enrolled in a graduate program at Winston-Salem State and is in line to start for the Rams.
"I really enjoy being part of the Ram family now," said Washington, who played in 11 games for the Deacons last season and had one blocked punt and a punt return for 22 yards. "It's a big transition from the ACC, but everyone here is just as good as anybody else and are on scholarship here, too, just like in Division I."
Washington, who will be 22 next week, said he considered Maryland but decided to stay home. His sister is about to have a baby, and he wants to be close for that.
"It's hard to get me out of Winston-Salem, so I'm glad I stayed here," said Washington, who redshirted his first season at Wake Forest, then played three seasons. "And we have a chance to be a great team this season. There are a lot of guys who are here to work and win, and if we keep this positive attitude, we are going to be fine."
Coach Jim Grobe of the Deacons said that Washington's speed and his ability on special teams were his best assets.
"I think he's really going to help them, and I'm glad he decided to play his final season," Grobe said. "A lot of guys get into that situation and graduate, and they don't really know if they want to play again, so I'm glad he decided to keep playing, and I'm sure he'll be a valuable player over there at Winston-Salem State."
Another reason Washington wanted to stay in school is because of the tight job market.
"With this economic disaster we are having, I wanted to stay in school, and Winston-Salem State will help me get my master's," Washington said.
The Rams went through a scrimmage Saturday morning in preparation for their Sept. 3 opener at Elizabeth City State, and Washington saw plenty of action at right cornerback.
Another player who stood out in the scrimmage, tight end Michael Byrd, also has another year of eligibility after graduating from East Carolina. Byrd, from Thomasville, is 6-3 and 240 pounds.
"Both C.J. and Byrd are really going to help us," coach Connell Maynor of WSSU said. "We see C.J. as a lock-down cornerback, and Michael just gives us another weapon at tight end."
The Rams also could get a boost from cornerback Andre Kates, a transfer from Indiana. Kates was recently admitted to WSSU, Maynor said, and can't practice until Monday.
"We should be pretty good, and they went 8-2 last year," said Kates, who signed with Florida while in high school but was ruled academically ineligible.
He moved on to junior college, then played at Indiana last season. He ran into trouble when he questioned, through a Twitter post, why he wasn't playing more and was suspended for two games. Kates, 5-11, 192 and a former junior-college All-America, played in five games for the Hoosiers and had two tackles.
Now he says he's looking for a fresh start at WSSU.
"I like the coaches a lot, and they can relate to the players," Kates said. "They can relate to guys like me who are from the inner city. I'm from Washington, D.C. I just like their schemes, so I'm looking forward to getting out there in practice."

ohsixrain Money that is how!! WSSU has the money to give him! Trust me we will be just fine with what we have. A lot of the ACC players have no respect for the HBCU schools But they will see that it's not as easy as they think it is .

How did he by-pass A&T to go to Winston...I'm sick of this. i'm sick of it too, ohsixrain. central picked up a couple acc transfers also. we've just got to make our program more attractive. we're coming off of a 1-10 record, we're struggling with our apr, and we're only funding 33 scholarships. right now, i don't think our program is very attractive to transfers and we're also somewhat hampered in that we can't take chances on guys who don't cut it in the classroom. i think things will get better next year if we have a respectable season, increase our funding, and get our apr together...

Dude's a grad student so his acedemics shouldn't be at question. I'm sure he's leaving UNC because of all of their issues they are having right now.

You are confusing the two posts. Though they are both going to WSSU, the guy from Wake is a Grad. student. The guy from UNC is Soph.

We dont have the money... we dont have the wins..... Come on people, lets work with what we have and not pitch a fit every time we see the neighbors getting new toys. Realize our situation and live in that reality.

Maynor and Hayes are doing it up, smartly. To get Div I players with experience, who have graduated and are good citizens, is a real good deal and impressive.
