Williams HS quarterback dies 3 days after victory Tuesday, August 30, 2011 By The Times-News of Burlington
BURLINGTON (MCT) — Williams High football quarterback Harry Cohen died Monday night at N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill.
"We are extremely saddened to confirm that Harry Cohen, Williams High senior, passed away this evening at approximately 8 p.m. at Children's Hospital at UNC," said Jenny Faulkner, Alamance-Burlington School System spokeswoman. "We ask for your continued support, your thoughts and your prayers for Harry's family, the Williams High football team and for the entire extended school community."
When students learned of his death, they gathered at the school to mourn the loss of their classmate and friend.
Cohen was taken to the hospital Sunday morning and his condition as well as what happened that led to his hospitalization remained unclear.
School officials wouldn't provide any details about his condition in an effort to respect his family's privacy and because of federal privacy regulations regarding medical information.
Williams head football coach David Green described students as "reserved."
"There was a lot of hugging and a lot of thinking about Harry, a lot of talking about Harry today," said Green during a press conference in the football stadium Monday afternoon. He's coached 39 years, but this is his first season coaching at Williams.
The teen who is described as always having a "smile on his face" and one of "those kids who everybody loves" was on a lot of minds Monday and in a lot of prayers.
"The players, coaches, the community have come together and everybody is just kind of leaning on each other for support," Green said. "... This is a tight knit community and people have really rallied behind us."
Cohen, a senior, led his team to a 27-17 victory over Southern Alamance on Friday night. He rushed for 241 yards and passed for 107 yards. "Friday night, he had one of the most amazing games I've seen a high school player have," Green said.
And it apparently showed all over Cohen's face.
"The last time I saw him Friday night, he was sitting out on the steps with the biggest grin I've ever seen," Green said.
Fellow team captain, Alex Gee, said Cohen was fine after the game, and he seemed like himself on Saturday when Gee spoke with him.
"We joked around about the game," Gee said, adding he was the "same old Harry."
But something happened overnight Saturday or early Sunday that changed all of that. Gee said that his father woke him up Sunday morning and said they needed to go to the hospital. They first headed to Alamance Regional Medical Center and eventually to North Carolina Children's Hospital, where many of the seniors on the team gathered to support Cohen's family.
"It's been a tough few days," Gee said.
While no one expected life to take this kind of turn, Gee explained that Green worked to prepare the football team all along about the importance of taking care of each other, especially during times of adversity.
"We're a football team, but we are also a family," Gee said. "Together we are stronger than any one person."
The team met with counselors and coaches and decided to hold a shortened practice Monday after school as a show of support for their quarterback. Other athletic events scheduled at Williams High on Monday were cancelled.
"We think it's important for the guys to be around each other," Green said.
The football team and all of Cohen's classmates leaned on one another and did what they could to support their friend. On Sunday with less than an hour's notice, many gathered for an impromptu prayer vigil in the afternoon and in the evening students, staff, parents, coaches, including several from other schools in the county, milled in and out of the gym, which was opened for people to gather.
Many sat on the bleachers talking and offering comfort to one another. Others wrote prayers and words of encouragement on posters that were then hung on the walls.
A Williams High School student on Sunday created a "Wear black and gold for Harry Cohen" page on Facebook. By Monday nigth more than 3,000 people had joined the page — several from other schools in the county and country — and were leaving comments and prayers for Cohen and his family.
"There has been huge support," said Gee who was wearing a black Bulldogs shirt with a black-and-gold ribbon pinned to his chest.
Gee has played sports with Cohen since the third grade. He said they were more than just teammates. They were friends.
