High school football teams will take to the air today on the campus of South Carolina State University.
For the first time in five years, a 7-on-7 passing tournament will take place on various playing fields at the university including; SCSU’s Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, the band practice fields adjacent to it and Robert E. Howard Middle School. A total of 18 teams from around the Palmetto State will compete in as many as six, 25-minute non-contact passing sessions.
All of the teams will take part in four morning scrimmages starting at 9:30 a.m. before a tournament is held in the afternoon to determine a champion, according to event coordinator and SCSU defensive line coach David Blanchard. Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Bethune-Bowman and Allendale-Fairfax are among the local teams participating as well as out-of-area schools such as Cheraw, Colleton County, C.A. Johnson, W.L. Keenan, Lower Richland and Wilson.
In 2001, it was Wilson who won the 7-on-7 passing tournament when it was originally coordinated under former Orangeburg-Wilkinson head football coach Tommy Brown. A year later, J.F. Byrnes rolled through the passing tournament on its way to winning the Class 4-A Division II championship. Many of the participating teams have spent the past three weeks involved in passing leagues, with O-W serving as host to a passing camp every Thursday which has included B-E and Bethune-Bowman. A week ago, B-E held its annual passing tournament which ended in a 14-14 tie with South Aiken. This is the second of three youth-related football events scheduled this month at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. Next weekend, former SCSU place-kicker Cedric Oglesby is bringing back his two-day kicking academy for youngsters 10-and-under.
Among the benefits of the camp are:
n Teaching effective technique and fundamental skills for kicking, punting and snapping.
n An opportunity to produce a training video and use it for analyzing kicking skills.
n Learning how to kick under pressure.
n Receiving a personal evaluation to continue post-camp development.
“We’ll be teaching campers fundamentals, form and technique so their strength and power will come as they get older,#” said Oglesby, one of three black starting placekickers in the history of the NFL and AFL.
The cost of the Oglesby Kicking Academy is $300 for all commuter campers and $350 for overnight campers. For the first time, campers from Calhoun, Charleston, Fairfield, Florence, Greenville, Kershaw, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda and Spartanburg counties are eligible for free camp tuition if they complete an application with a coaches recommendation and a 100-word or more essay stating why they deserve a college scholarship. Applications are available by calling (678)481-3316, logging on to www.kickdoctor.com or by sending an e-mail to cedricoglesby@kickdoctor.com. Those interested can register by either sending the entire fee or a $100 deposit to the following address: The Cedric Oglesby Kicking Academy, P.O. Box 311005, Atlanta, Ga. 31131.
