Release: 10/16/2010 DOVER, Del. - Opportunities to put a "1" underneath the "W" column in the standings presented themselves over and over again to the North Carolina A&T football team on Saturday.
But too many of those opportunities went unused as the Aggies lost to Delaware State 31-26 at Alumni Stadium.
It was the first win of the season for the Hornets (1-5, 1-3), while the Aggies (0-7, 0-4) will search for win No. 1 on Oct. 23 when they face Howard at Aggie Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
After starting a quarterback - senior George Hines - who hadn't even made his way on the roster yet, the Aggies took a 14-12 lead at the half. Hines, a three-year starter in the outfield for North Carolina A&T's baseball team, was one of three quarterbacks to play for the Aggies on Saturday.
Hines completed three passes and ran for 29 yards on seven carries. He threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to tight end Devon Stewart in the second quarter, but it was called back because of a holding penalty. He didn't play in the second half due to a concussion.
The Aggies then turned to a player who hasn't played since the first half of the first game of the season. Redshirt sophomore Terrence Webb was up to the challenge. He went 12-for-22 for 149 yards and threw for two touchdowns. He received some help from sophomore quarterback Ricky Lewis' 44-yard completion to Wallace Miles.
With the Aggies down 18-14, the big play gave the Aggies the ball at the DSU 11-yard line to open the fourth quarter. N.C. A&T was only able to move the ball three yards over the next three plays, which led to a 25-yard field goal attempt by Sullivan Shidler. Shidler's attempt missed wide right, leaving the Aggies with a missed opportunity.
The Hornets did not miss out. After the missed field goal, they drove the ball 80 yards in seven plays and took a 25-14 lead with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Glaud to Larrone Moore with 9:56 remaining in the game.
Webb would not let the Aggies surrender. He completed passes of 12 and 25 yards to Miles and Torrian Warren respectively. Webb's 16-yard run set up his 9-yard touchdown pass to Buster Cooper as the Aggies moved within six at 25-20.
N.C. A&T's defense responded with a three-and-out, giving the Aggies a chance to take the lead with five minutes remaining. But on a 1st-and-10 from the DSU 14, the Aggies fumbled away the football. The miscue gave the Hornets outstanding field position.
It didn't matter. The Aggies defense became stingy once again. Jamal Wardlaw and Jeremy Graham each had tackles behind the line scrimmage as the Aggies forced the Hornets into another three-and-out. A missed DSU field goal put the Aggies in position to win again, this time with 3 ½ minutes to play.
But on 4th-and-14, Webb fumbled the ball on an Andre Carroll sack. Olusegun Ayanbiola scooped up the loose ball and ran 22 yards for a DSU game-clinching touchdown.
The Aggies turned the ball over three times on Saturday. The Hornets one turnover led to a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jeremy Graham. The Aggies were also able to score on their first possession of the game for the first time this season.
Hines and Mayhew led the Aggies on an 18-play, 72-yard drive that ate up two-thirds of the first-quarter clock. Hines had a 16-yard completion to Donta Prince on the drive, and Mayhew finished things off with a 1-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-goal. Mayhew, who leads the MEAC in rushing, had 132 yards on 27 carries.
