i listened to the game over the internet and according to the announcer, tweet made 2 bone head plays. of course, not seeing it with my own eyes, i have to assume the announcer was accurate. but he said tweet took a 3 point shot about 5 seconds into the shot clock when we had a 4 point lead with less than 1:30 seconds left in the game. she could've burned another 20 seconds or so off of the shot clock but instead she took a 3 point shot and missed.
then, with about 14 seconds left in the game while a&t had a 6 point lead, tweet fouled an scsu player for no reason at all instead of letting the clock run out.
now, tweet is a smart player. but i don't understand why she made two very unwise plays at the end of the game during crunch time...

Every great player tries too hard sometimes to try to carry a team by themselves in a close game. That's why excellent bench coaching (X's and O's plus leadership) is so important in clutch games.

Lady Bulldogs drop 5th straight contest By SCSU Sports Information Sunday, January 24, 2010 Defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion North Carolina A&T closed the game with 14-7 run to capture a 67-60 win over host South Carolina State Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. After S.C. State’s Tiara Knotts made the second of two free throws to deadlock the contest at 53-all with 4:18 to play, the Lady Aggies’ Jaleesa Sams converted on two free throws at the 3:09 mark to trigger a 6-0 run that put the visitors ahead 59-53 with 2:11 showing. Reserve Shontay Wylie got a follow shot for the Lady Bulldogs and Trinese Fox made one of two from the line to pull the host to within 59-56 with just under a minute left. But Amber Calvin converted a three-point play on N.C. A&T’s next trip down court for a 62-56 advantage and the closest S.C. State could get after that was that six-point margin. Sams had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead N.C. A&T. Crystal Murdaugh came off the bench for 12 points and Calvin finished with 11 in the Lady Aggie victory, the 10th straight regular-season MEAC triumph and the 13th overall against conference competition for Coach Patricia Bibbs’ squad. N.C. A&T improved to 11-7 and 6-0 in the MEAC.For the rest of the story: www.thetandd.com/articles/2010/01/24/bulldogzone/doc4b5bd5919c268126989730.txt

it seems that baby girl amber calvin has a knack for making clutch plays! seems like every time we play a close game she plays a key role in the clutch...

It appears that Bibbs had Murdaugh coming off the bench for the first time all season. That may have helped her play with less pressure against SCSU.

AGGIES HIT CLUTCH FREE THROWS, BEAT SCSU
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – North Carolina A&T women’s basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs sounded like a grade school teacher after the Aggies 67-60 win over S.C. State Saturday afternoon at SMH Memorial Center.
“Jaleesa Sams, Ta’Wuana Cook, Tyronnica Alford, Amber Calvin, Lamona Smalley,’’ Bibbs uttered in the Aggies locker room.
She wasn’t exactly calling the role to see if those Lady Aggies were present. She was running down the list of players who helped the Aggies go an impressive 25-for-27 from the free throw line. The Aggies needed every last freebie they got as a determined S.C. State team that game into the game without a win in the MEAC gave the Aggies (11-7, 6-0 MEAC) all they could handle.
“We practice so diligently on free throws,’’ said Bibbs who has seen her team hit 20 or more free throws six times this season. “We know free throws are ballgame winners. When you have a target on your back like we do, free throws make all the difference. It’s one thing to say you hit free throws, it’s another thing to say you hit clutch free throws.”
Senior forward Lamona Smalley, who was 3-for-3 from the line on Saturday, hit two free throws to give the Aggies a 57-55 with 2:16 remaining. After a JaQuayla Berry jumper in the lane gave the Aggies a two-point lead. Ta’Wuana Cook then stole the in-bound pass and after two Aggie misses, Amber Calvin swooped in and scored on a reverse layup. She was fouled on the play and converted her only free throw of the game, which led to her being put on the list.
“Amber is a franchise-type point guard,’’ said Bibbs about the freshman out of Fayetteville, N.C., who finished with 11 points. “She got the job done for us.”
The Aggies grabbed a nine-point lead early in the second half. But the Bulldogs (5-12, 0-5 MEAC) went on a 14-5 run to take a 41-40 lead with 12:19 remaining in the game. Things got really tight when Whitney Wiley grabbed a defensive board and went coast-to-coast for a runner in the lane that gave S.C. State a 48-45 lead with 7:03 remaining.
The Bulldogs still held a lead as late as the three-minute mark of the second half before two Jaleesa Sams free throws and Smalley’s free throws turned the game in N.C. A&T’s favor.
“Well a lot of times the young ladies we’ll see that 0-4 and it will fool them,’’ said Bibbs. “You still have to play the game no matter what their record is. They are a scrappy team, but we showed a little savvy late in the game that helped us pull through. We had the big three late in the game, which is rebounding, playing good defense and knocked down free throws. As long as we’re doing that we’re going to win more than we lose.”
The Aggies will play arch-rival Winston-Salem State Monday night at 5:30 from LJVM. S.C. State was led by Wiley’s 20 points and seven rebounds.

It's good to see that the team has improved its free throw shooting. That is what killed us against Towson.

Hall of fame bound! all she needs is three that run and finish with her and Berry, that team will be dynamic! (Maybe next year we will have two in Davis and Chalmers cousin!)
