Scouting North Carolina A&T
Like Liberty, North Carolina A&T was hit hard by graduation after the conclusion of the 2008-09 campaign. MEAC Player of the Year Brittanie Taylor-James and fellow first-team All-MEAC performer Amber Bland both exhausted their eligibility after leading the Aggies to a 26-7 record and the 2009 MEAC title.
The Aggies have also faced a challenging early-season schedule, which has seen them play just one home game (Dec. 1 versus Auburn) at Corbett Sports Center. In all, 14 of North Carolina A&T’s first 15 games will be played away from home.
Ta’Wuana “Tweet” Cook, a 5-8 senior guard, has been the Aggies’ leader thus far in 2009-10. She is scoring a team-high 16.2 ppg and connecting on 50.0 percent (29-of-58) of her three-point tries. Lamona Smalley, a 6-0 senior forward, is contributing 9.8 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg.
The Coaching Matchup
Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 11th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to nine Big South titles. A five-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 244-81 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women’s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.751) ranked ninth all-time among NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches at the season’s outset. Green is 3-0 versus North Carolina A&T, and his first career coaching victory was an 85-46 win over the Aggies, Nov. 23, 1999 at the Vines Center.
North Carolina A&T is coached by Patricia Cage-Bibbs, who is 83-53 in her fifth season with the Aggies and 454-259 in 25 total years as a collegiate head coach. The two-time reigning MEAC Coach of the Year has led a team to the NCAA Tournament seven times, including her coaching stints at Grambling State and Hampton. Cage-Bibbs is 0-6 all-time against Liberty, including four setbacks as Hampton’s head coach.
Liberty-North Carolina A&T Series Notes
Liberty has won six consecutive meetings with North Carolina A&T, claiming a 6-3 advantage in the all-time head-to-head series.
Lady Flames head coach Carey Green recorded his first career coaching victory against the Aggies, Nov. 23, 1999 at the Vines Center. That day, Liberty defeated visiting North Carolina A&T handily, 85-46.
Liberty has recorded wins over the Aggies in each of the last two seasons. The Lady Flames were the only visiting team to come away from the Corbett Sports Center victorious during the 2007-08 season, posting a 68-64 triumph on Nov. 16, 2007.
Last season, Megan Frazee’s 23 points and 12 rebounds in her return from an ankle injury propelled Liberty past North Carolina A&T, 72-58, on Dec. 29, 2008. The win gave the Lady Flames a spot in the title game of the Hokie Hardwood Classic.
The Aggies have not defeated Liberty since winning a 44-43 nailbiter at the Vines Center, Feb. 15, 1996.
Liberty and North Carolina A&T have split their four meetings at the Vines Center. The Aggies have not visited Lynchburg since Nov. 23, 1999.
