Big time, gritty win!
I'm very proud of the effort of this team and coaching staff.
Great way to head into the Auburn matchup. I am so ready.

www.yalebulldogs.com/sports/w-baskbl/2009-10/releases/200911284yshpqNov 28, 2009 Shootout Goes to North Carolina A&T, 80-79ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Yale women’s basketball team broke out of its season-long shooting slump, knocking down more than half of its shots from the floor on Saturday against North Carolina A&T at the Holiday Inn & Suites Express Midtown Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by the University of New Mexico. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Aggies from North Carolina A&T kept pace with them every step of the way, and an offensive rebound and put-back from Lamona Smalley as the final buzzer sounded sank Yale by a final score of 80-79. Senior Melissa Colborne led all players with 17 points, and junior Mady Gobrecht registered her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs (2-3) have now lost three straight contests after starting the season with two consecutive wins. North Carolina A&T improves to 2-3 with the win. Colborne’s game-high scoring output came on 8-for-16 shooting from the floor. She also pulled down seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. Freshman Ericka von Kaeppler was 7-for-8 from the field, netting a career-best 14 points, as Yale shot 50.7% (35-69) as a team. Junior Yoyo Greenfield netted 13 points for the second consecutive night, and freshman Megan Vasquez was the fifth Bulldog to reach double figures with 10 points. Gobrecht complimented her double-double with three blocked shots and a game-high six assists. Yale was once again the aggressor on the boards, outrebounding the Aggies, 46-35, but Smalley’s offensive rebound in the closing seconds proved to be the different. Smalley was one of five North Carolina A&T players in double figures with 13 points. Tierra Thomas and Amber Calvin led the Aggies with 14 points apiece. The contest was tight from the opening tip, featuring six ties in the first 20 minutes of play. Yale would open up a short-lived nine-point edge in the first half, but the high-scoring affair went to the intermission with the Bulldogs leading by just three points, 43-40. von Kaeppler led all players with 10 points in the opening half. The Bulldogs opened up an eight-point lead in the second stanza, claiming at 63-55 advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Aggies responded with a 10-2 run, featuring two points from five different players, to knot the score once again, 65-65, with 6:22 left. A Colborne layup gave Yale the lead at 71-70, and the Bulldogs soon reclaimed a two-possession advantage at 77-72 with 3:22 remaining. The potent North Carolina A&T offense would battle back, however, and the Aggies soon found themselves trailing by a single point, 79-78, with possession of the ball and 16 seconds on the clock. The Yale defense forced a tough shot by Crystal Murdaugh, which bounced off the rim and out, but Smalley was in the right place at the right time for the game-winning put-back. Yale will travel back to the Eastern Time Zone for its next contest, a non-conference tilt at Bucknell on Dec. 5. Action returns to the John J. Lee Amphitheater on Dec. 9, as the Bulldogs host Boston University for a 5:30 p.m. game. report filed by Drew M. Kingsley, Yale Sports Publicity

Looks like Murdaugh made 2 big free throws right before Smalley's game winner. Everybody contributed in the win last night.

AGGIES BEAT BULLDOGS AT THE BUZZER
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – During the preseason, North Carolina A&T women’s basketball Patricia Cage-Bibbs was constantly asked how she plans to replace 45 percent of her offense with the graduation of Brittanie Taylor-James and Amber Bland.
On Saturday evening, she was also faced with the question of how do you compensate for leading scorer Ta’Wuana “Tweet” Cook being out along with fellow starter Jaleesa Sams and key reserve Nakia DeBlanc?
The Aggies surprising answer was to start three freshmen and utilize a buzzer beater by a veteran. Senior Lamona Smalley tipped in a Crystal Murdaugh miss to lead the Aggies to an 80-79 win over Yale in the consolation game of the New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament at The Pit.
Five Aggies were in double figures led by freshman Amber Calvin and sophomore Tierra Thomas. Both finished with 14 points apiece. Smalley finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
“The ladies really believed in themselves tonight,’’ said Bibbs, who played with only eight players. “They used our situation as motivation, so you really have to be proud of young people for rallying around each other to finish off a task.”
The task of winning the game looked bleak when Yale’s Melissa Colborne scored on a layup with 1:36 to play to give the Bulldogs a 79-74 lead. Things weren’t looking any better as the Aggies turned the ball over on their next possession. But a Murdaugh steal and a JaQuayla Berry layup turned momentum in the Aggies favor.
Colborne’s missed layup led to a loose ball foul on the Bulldogs. Murdaugh hit two free throws to slice the lead to one with 36 seconds remaining. After Colborne was called for traveling, the Aggies used a 30 second timeout with 16 seconds to play.
“They play was called for (Crystal Murdaugh) to pop out and hit the jump shot,’’ said Bibbs. “But Lamona always seems to be in the right place at the right time. She made a great hustle play.”
Murdaugh did take the shot, but it was Smalley’s offensive rebound and put back at the buzzer that improved the Aggies to 2-3 on the season. Yale was led by Colborne’s 17 points. Mady Gobrecht added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Aggies return to action Tuesday, December 1 when they try to “Pack the House” at Corbett Sports Center against the Auburn Tigers of the SEC. Game time is 7 p.m.

its unfortunate that we had to play without tweet, sams, and deblanc. but now that we've won the game, playing without them turned out to be a blessing in disguise. it forced the puppies to grow up immediately and it forced the team to look for scoring from someone other than cooke and sams. i'm extremely happy that we won because it will give the puppies a lot of confidence and show the team that they can win without cooke and sams. this is a very big win for the lady aggies! not only because it's a sorely needed win, but also because it force fed the growing up of the puppies and it force fed the team to find scoring from someone other than cooke and sams.
i think this game goes a very long way towards establishing an identity for this team. and the freshmen took a giant step toward gaining the confidence and experience they need to be major contributors this year. now the really big test comes our way next week with auburn! the freshmen and the rest of the team couldn't have picked a better time to build confidence...
